PDF (Portable Document Format) files are widely used to create and exchange documents because a PDF saves the formatting unaltered regardless of the operating system or software used. Since it is a different type of document from that of a word processor, it requires special software to open it. Almost any device can open a PDF with the right software.

Method 1 of 5: Windows

1. Download Adobe Reader. This is a free program that allows you to view and read PDF files. You can download Adobe Reader from get.adobe.com/reader/. You cannot create or edit PDF files with it.
   • There are several other free alternatives if you don't want to use Adobe Reader.
   • Windows 8 has its own PDF reader.
2. Decline the ad for McAfee. One of the disadvantages of installing Adobe Reader is the software that is forced on you without being asked. Pay attention and uncheck everything you don't want to use.
3. Double click on a PDF after installing Adobe Reader. In most cases, the PDF will now open in the Reader.
4. If the PDF is secured, enter the correct password. If you do not have that password, you will not be able to view the file.

Resolving problems

1. Windows asks which program to open the PDF with. If you have installed Adobe Reader but do not want to open PDF files, you may still have to indicate that the PDF files should be opened with the Reader.
   • Right click on the PDF and select "Open With".
   • Select "Adobe Reader" from the list of programs.
   • If Adobe Reader is not in the list, you will have to search your computer for the program. You will usually find this in C: Program Files (x86) Adobe Reader.
2. The PDF requires a password. If the PDF requires a password, and you don't have one, the only way to open the file is to ask the creator to send you the password. If you have forgotten the password, there is no other option than to crack it, but this can take hours or even days if it is a strong password.
   • A well-known password recovery program is Advanced PDF Password Recovery from Elcomsoft. You need the Pro version, which will probably cost you about $ 99.
3. A PDF does not open because it does not meet the Adobe standard. This is usually the case with a PDF that was not created with Adobe software, or if you are trying to open a really old PDF with a newer version of the Adobe Reader.
   • The solution may be to use a different PDF reader. There are a few options, such as Foxit Reader, one of the more popular programs.
   • Upload the PDF to Google Drive. You may lose some formatting, but there is a chance you can open it.

Method 2 of 5: Mac

1. Double click on the PDF. Preview is part of OS X, and is a tool that allows you to open a wide variety of files, including PDF files. With Preview you can read the PDF files, but not edit them.
2. If necessary, use a program other than preview. If you want to use a program other than Preview, you can set this to happen automatically when you open a PDF.
   • Select a PDF in Finder but don't open it.
   • Click on the menu File > "Get Info".
   • Open the section "Open with".
   • Select the application you want to use from the drop-down menu.
   • Click on Change All ...
3. Enter a password if necessary. PDF files are sometimes password protected to prevent unauthorized access to the file. If you have forgotten the password and cannot find it in any other way, the only option is to crack the password.
   • If you need to crack the password, iStonsoft PDF Password Remover for Mac is a well-regarded option. If the password is strong, it can take hours or even days to crack.

Resolving problems

1. PDF files do not open in Safari. This is caused by an error in the Adobe plugin after updating Safari. You can fix this by manually removing the plugin and restarting Safari.
   • Open / Library / Internet Plugins / and delete the Adobepdf.plugin
   • Open / User / Username / Library / Internet Plugins / and delete the Adobe PDF.plugin
   • Restart Safari and try opening the PDF again.
2. "Adobe was unable to open the PDF because...’. This error usually occurs when you save a PDF via Safari's "Save As" or "PDF Export".
   • Open the PDF again in Safari.
   • Click the Disk (Save) button at the top of the window or from the menu that appears when you move the mouse to the bottom (center) of the page.
   • Save the PDF to your computer.
   • Open the re-saved PDF.
3. pdf files will not download in Firefox. If you want to download a PDF with Firefox and nothing happens, there may be a problem with the Adobe Reader plugin.
   • Click on the Firefox menu and select "Tools".
   • Select "Add-ons" and then "Plugins".
   • Find the "Adobe Acrobat NPAPi Plugin" and disable it.

Method 3 of 5: Android

1. Download an app that supports PDF files. While Android doesn't have built-in support for reading PDF files, there are many free apps that can open PDF files for you with ease. You may even already have some on your device:
   • Google Drive
   • Quickoffice
   • Adobe Reader
   • Foxit Mobile PDF
2. Find the PDF you want to open. Usually, you will be able to open a PDF that you download from the notification bar by clicking on it after the download is complete. If you want to open the file later, look in the Downloads folder.
   • Open "My Files" or "File Manager" on your device. If you don't have a file manager, you can download it for free from the Google Play store.
   • Open the Downloads folder. Dis is the default location where downloaded files are stored.
   • Tap the PDF file to open it. If you have chosen a default app, it will open automatically. If you have just installed an app to open PDF files, or you have installed multiple apps that allow you to read PDF files, you will be prompted to choose the app you want to use.

Resolving problems

1. A message "Can't open file" appears while downloading a PDF. There are several things that can cause a problem.
   • Try to use the File Manager to open the downloaded file. You can find the file in the Downloads folder. If you cannot open the file using a File Manager, you may need to restart your browser.
   • Reset your browser via the Settings app, by selecting "Apps" or via "Applications". Find your browser in the list of apps, then tap "Clear data".
2. The PDF tries to open the wrong app. If another app is started to open the PDF without that app supporting PDF files, your default settings may not be correct.
   • Open Settings.
   • Select "Apps" or "Applications".
   • Select the app that is trying to open the PDF.
   • In the "Launch by Default" section, tap "Clear defaults".
   • Try opening the PDF again. You should now get a notification asking to select the app you want to use.

Method 4 of 5: iOS

1. Tap the PDF you want to open. iOS has a built-in PDF reader for opening PDF attachments in emails or PDF files found online.
2. Tap the open PDF to open the menu. This allows you to select another app to read the PDF.
3. Tap "Open in... ”or tap the Share button. If you are viewing the PDF in your Mail app, use the Share button. If you want to read the pdf in Safari, use "Open in ...". This will display a list that support PDF files.
4. Select the app you want to use. You can add your PDF files to iBooks, or open them in Adobe Reader or any other PDF application you have on your iOS device. The PDF will immediately open in the selected app.

Method 5 of 5: Kindle

1. Move the PDF to your Kindle. There are several ways you can do this.
   • You can connect your Kindle to your computer and add the file to your Kindle. Click here for more detailed instructions.
   • You can wirelessly send the PDF to your Kindle via email.
2. Open the file on your Kindle. Once the PDF has been sent, you can select it from your Kindle library.
   • There aren't many options on the Kindle to do anything with your PDF, as you can't add functionality to the Kindle with other apps.
