If knitting seems tricky, start by choosing a simple knit that can be completed quickly. A patchwork blanket is a blanket that makes an impression. However, it is easy to make because you first knit individual squares and then sew them together. By using thick yarn and thick knitting needles, the blanket is also quickly done and you can easily hide beginner mistakes.

To step

Part 1 of 4: Cast on the stitches

  1. Grab your knitting yarn and knitting needles. There are no clear and firm rules for which knitting needles to use for certain types of yarn. Choose yarn that you like and keep in mind that with thicker yarn you will get through your yarn faster than if you use thin or fine yarn. The same goes for your knitting needles. If you want a larger and chunky knit blanket, use thicker needles.
    • Consider using knitting needles with a diameter of 15 millimeters and very thick yarn to knit a blanket that will be done very quickly.
  2. Keep putting on stitches. Continue to work so that you have 14 stitches on your knitting needle. This will become an edge of one of the squares that make up the blanket. The squares measure approximately 8 by 8 inches. Grab the needle with the stitches with your left hand so that you can start knitting.
    • Keep pushing the yarn against your palm with your fingertips so that the yarn does not get in the way and there is tension so you can cast on the stitches quickly.
    EXPERT TIP

Use the correct knitting needle. Hold the needle without stitches on it in your right hand. Insert the tip of this needle into the stitch closest to the tip of the other needle.

    • Insert the needle under the stitch so that it goes through it from front to back, forming an "X".
  3. Knit. Hold the needle with the knitted square attached in your left hand. Knit two stitches on the empty needle in your right hand. You will use these stitches to finish the rest of the square that is on the other needle. You should always have two stitches on the right needle.
    • When finishing the knitting, remove the square from the knitting needles. You will be able to take it off the needles without worrying about it coming loose. You can sew this square to another rounded square when assembling the blanket.
  4. Insert the left needle into the right needle. Push the tip of the left needle into the first stitch on the right needle. This should be the first stitch you worked on this needle.
  5. Work more squares. You can make the blanket as big as you want, but keep in mind that you will need to knit more squares for a larger blanket. If you want to make a large square blanket, you can, for example, opt for a blanket of seven by seven squares.
    • Consider placing the squares on a large surface so that you can move them to your liking. This is an especially good idea if you are using knitting yarn in different colors.Alternate the squares so that the squares with vertical rows are next to squares with horizontal rows.
  6. Assemble your blanket. Keep sewing squares together until you have seven in a row. Make seven of these rows in total so you can sew the rows together and make a large blanket. You can also make a smaller blanket by using fewer squares. It is also possible to make a rectangular blanket by making one side shorter than the other.
    • Consider using beads and other decorative items when knitting. You can also sew the beads onto your knitting afterwards. Also consider knitting flowers, leaves or a decorative border.
