This nest box is low maintenance and equipped with a built-in WiFi camera, so without no data cable. It doesn't take much to make and uses unpainted wood, which is better for birds than painted wood.

Necessary materials

  • Shelf douglas 240 x 14 x 1.6 cm
  • Stainless steel wood screws
  • Outdoor resistant wood line
  • Piece of plexiglass 28 x 14 cm
  • Camera

Tools

  • Sharp saw (because douglas is tough wood)
  • Tape measure, pencil, square, sandpaper
  • Cordless drill
  • Jigsaw or semicircular wood rasp (for the hole)
  • Sharp knife (for the plexiglass)

To step

  1. Image titled Nestbox2’ src=First saw these pieces from the plank according to these drawings.
  2. Image titled Nestbox3’ src=Saw one cut diagonally (see red circle).
  3. Image titled Nestbox4’ src=Draw a circle of 3 cm on one of the boards. This can be done around a beer cap, for example. First drill one hole and saw out the rest with a jigsaw, or drill a few holes and round the hole nicely with a semicircular rasp.
  4. Image titled Nestbox5’ src=Screw the bottom on two sides. Make sure to predrill all wood parts, including the part where the end of the screw goes, otherwise the wood will crack. Gluing is not necessary. Use a support for stability while working.
  5. Image titled Nestbox6’ src=Now screw on the two sides.
  6. Image titled Nestbox12’ src=Now saw the roof parts. Make an oblique zave cut for a "real" gabled roof. That gives less chance of leakage and is nicer, but also more difficult to make.
  7. Image titled Nestbox8’ src=Determine the cutting angle. For those who have a saw table: this is how you determine the cutting angle.
  8. Image titled Nestbox9’ src=Glue the roof parts together and screw them to the house. You do not have to glue the roof parts to the house. The glue smears enormously, but that can be removed later with a spatula or chisel.
  9. Cut the piece of plexiglass to size. You can do this for a larger piece by making several cuts with a sharp knife, preferably on both sides, and then breaking it. With a hacksaw you have a chance of tearing. Small corrections can be made with a sweet file.
  10. Image titled Nestbox10’ src=Place the plexiglass. In the photo with a leftover L-profile and a slat, but it is also possible with a U-profile or with two slats.
  11. Image titled Nestbox11’ src=Connect the front parts to the hinge. In the photo there are holes in the front parts that do not belong in it.
  12. Image titled Nestbox12’ src=Attach the two locks.
  13. Image titled Nestbox13’ src=Preferably make the two folding doors so that you can adjust the camera without disturbing the nest.
  14. Image titled Nestbox14’ src=Use the leftover piece for reinforcement for those who want to place the box on a pole. That looks nice.
  15. Image titled Nestbox15’ src=Make the back with corners. Use stainless steel screws again.
  16. Wait for the tenants. In another article I am going to write about the camera and how it should be connected.Image titled Nest box16’ src=
