There are many types of dresses you can make, but if you are a beginner and want to make something general, an adjustable dress is a good one to start with. Only one hem is required for this dress and it can be worn in many different styles. This makes it easy to style it for a wedding and also for a night out with friends. This pattern is easy to adapt to make a dress in any size and length.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Buying and cutting your material

  1. Buy a stretch fabric. The material for your dress should stretch; that is absolutely necessary for an adjustable dress, or an infinity dress. While many stretch materials are available, fabric containing spandex is usually the easiest to use. This will also look best if you are a novice seamstress.
    • You can buy basically any fabric you want for the skirt, but the straps and waistband really need stretch fabric.
  2. Hem the skirt. If you want, you can hem the skirt for a more professional, cleaner edge. However, it is not necessary. Some fabrics automatically provide a finished edge. Jersey is a good example of this.

Part 3 of 3: Making other dresses

  1. Make a dress out of a pillowcase. By making an elastic edge on a pillowcase, you can quickly and easily make a pencil dress. All you need to complete the look is a belt or other accessory around the waist. This is very useful for making fancy dress costumes, or for practicing your sewing skills (or just giving an old pillowcase a new lease of life).
  2. Make an empire waist dress. Such just has the waist just below the chest. You can easily make one by sewing a skirt to a top you already own or buy new. It's easy and very feminine and ladylike.
  3. Make a dress from a sheet. You can use a nice old sheet to make a nice dress. You only need the sewing skills of a beginner for this. It's a fun project if you want to make a cheerful dress out of your old children's sheets (covered in your favorite cartoon characters).
  4. Make a quick dress from your favorite skirt. You can make a simple dress by attaching a top to your favorite skirt. This is a fun sewing project suitable for beginners. Turn the top inside out and align the waistbands (the skirt will be on the inside of the top).
    • Remember it must be a stretchy skirt, without a zipper, as you could no longer use the zipper.

Tips

  • Use thick fabric. If it is not thick, you can use a double coat.
  • If you are using lace, it should be aligned with the fabric.
  • For one more easy option, you can try making a kurti, which is a type of Indian dress.
