Appliques are a great way to spice up dull clothes, or to freshen up old clothes and make them attractive again. You can also use them for personal gifts such as T-shirts, handbags, or caps for friends and loved ones. You can make an application of any design imaginable, so have fun! Read on and learn how to design and apply applications.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Create the application

  1. Choose a design and fabric. If this is your first time creating an appliqué, you may find it more convenient to use a simple design such as a heart, star or bird - objects with a clear silhouette.
    • Search online for “appliqué patterns” if you want to see a wide variety of designs made by other craftsmen. If you find one you like, and the maker doesn't mind, print it out for later use.
    • Remember to sew around the edges of your appliqué when attaching it to the garment of your choice. Simple geometric figures are easier to sew along than trees with many branches or a city skyline. Do whatever best suits your skill level.
    • Think about which fabric suits your appliqué as well as the object you'll be decorating with it. Base your choice on color and style. Light cottons and muslin work well.
    • If you want more of a challenge, create a design that consists of several layers and fabrics. For example, you can design a blackbird with red wing tips or a white crescent moon with a yellow star.
  2. Ready.

Tips

  • If you don't have a sewing machine, you can still confirm an application. Read this at “Check out How to Sew on a Patch on a Uniform”, for instructions on attaching an application by hand.
  • The fabric you choose for the application should never be heavier / firmer than the fabric of the substrate.
  • Appliques are also useful for covering holes or stains in old clothes.
  • Make sure you know the washing instructions for both your appliqué and the item you have attached the appliqué to before washing your creation.
