Monsters can provide you with valuable resources in Minecraft, but hunting them can be very bad for your health. If you have a lot of extra boulders, the following design will help you build an artificial cave in the sky that you can use to automatically kill monsters and collect whatever they leave behind.

To step

  1. Gather your materials. You will need 8 buckets of water, about 18 stacks (64 of each) of cobblestone for the trap, more so if you want a drop tube, and 64 plates (optionally).
  2. Build a tower at least 26 blocks high. If you plan to use it as a drop tube at a later time, leave it hollow. If you want to remove it at some point, you can use any easy-to-remove block, such as wool or mud.
    • Note: Minecraft mob specifications have changed slightly and some mobs (witches) now require a minimum of 26 blocks to drop before dying.
  3. Build a tower with a 2x2 hole inside.
  4. Place a chest outside at the base of the tower, and break the walls out of the tower up to 2 high all around.
  5. Place 2 hoppers behind your box and make a link with them.
  6. Place 2 more hoppers behind it, which will fill your pit and make a storage chest.
  7. Place 4 plates on top of the hoppers by holding down Shift and right clicking on the top.
  8. You can rebuild the walls in your tower (this will help keep the fallen items inside).
  9. On top of the tower, add 7 blocks away from the walls, making 4 platforms of 2x8.
  10. Add a wall around the platform (4x9).
  11. Place 2 water blocks at the back of the canal.
    • The water should run to the edge of the hole, but not fall into it.
  12. Do this on all 4 sides.
    • You can add another block to the wall of the canal and place boards over it to make the trap more effective. Mobs will think they can walk across the board and then fall into it. This step is not necessary.
  13. Fill in the space between the river platforms.
  14. Add a wall 3 blocks high and a ceiling.
    • If you don't want Endermen to appear and disable your spawner, just make a 2-block high wall.
  15. Close it off with a ceiling.
  16. Illuminate the top of the trap.
  17. Collect what was dropped from your chest.

Tips

  • Endermen can teleport themselves out of the trap, so don't build them 3 high because you're worried about Endermen.
  • A "drop tunnel" is not strictly necessary, and spiders can block a tunnel, unless you place half plates or windows along the tower to knock them down. An alternative is to leave out the drop tunnel altogether and enjoy the show, where enemy mobs drop dead, and give you all their loot at the same time.
  • An alternative is to cover the top of the spawner and nearby areas with plates to improve the effectiveness of the spawner as the bl level will be lowered.
  • You will need to be near this spawner so that the monsters will walk around and fall into the trap.
  • If you don't want a huge cobblestone structure blocking your view, build it underground.
