This wikiHow teaches you how to activate an FM receiver on an Android phone. The modem used in most phones can receive an FM signal. However, many manufacturers choose to turn off the FM function. Not all smartphones can receive an FM signal. If your Android phone or tablet can receive an FM signal, you can unlock the FM receiver with an app called NextRadio. You will also need something with a wire, such as wired headphones, to act as an antenna.

To step

1. Open the Google Play Store Type NextRadio in the search bar. The search bar is at the top of the Google Play Store screen. When you type something in the search bar, a list of matching apps will appear at the bottom of the search bar.
2. Tap on NextRadio Free Live FM Radio. This is the app with an icon that resembles a blue radio. This will display the NextRadio info page.
3. Tap the button to install. That's the green button at the bottom of the banner, at the top of the info page. This will install the app.
4. Open NextRadio. You can open NextRadio by tapping the "Open" button in the Google Play Store, or you can tap the icon that looks like a blue radio on your home screen or in your list of apps. If your Android phone can receive FM radio signals, the message “You're in luck! Your device can receive FM signals and you can now enjoy live local FM radio "appear.
5. Plug in wired headphones and drag to the left. The wire of the headphones will serve as an antenna. When you have connected wired headphones, drag to the left of your screen to display the next page.
   • Wireless and Bluetooth headphones cannot serve as a radio antenna.
6. Tap the button I'm ready!. This is the white button at the bottom of the screen. NextRadio will search for local radio stations.
   • If a pop-up appears asking you to allow NextRadio to access the location of this device, tap To allow.
7. Tap the button Local FM radio or Local streams. These options are located at the bottom of the banner, at the top of the screen. This will display a list of local radio stations.
8. Tap a radio station. When you find a radio station you want to listen to, tap it to play the radio station through your headphones. It may take a while for the radio station to start playing.
   • If you don't want to listen to the radio station through your headphones, tap the button with three vertical dots ( ⋮ ) in the upper right corner. Then tap Play through the speaker to listen to the radio through your device's speaker.
