Everyone wants to win the lottery, but usually not one number on our lottery tickets is correct. So how do you increase the odds of winning? Normally, this can only be done through probability calculation. The more tickets you have for a particular draw, the greater the chance of winning. But there are people who believe that it is more than just probability.

1. Buy more than one ticket. The more lottery tickets you buy, the greater the chance of winning.
   • At the State Lottery, the odds of winning the main prize of the 2014 New Year's Eve draw were one in 4.4 million. With the Lotto that is even less: the chance of winning the jackpot is 1 in 49 million. If you had 50 tickets, your chance would be about 1 in 1 million.
2. Set up a lottery pool. Get together a group of people who are willing to share a winning lottery ticket.
   • The amount you win is smaller because you split it up, but the chance of winning increases significantly.
3. Understand that the other lottery tickets do not affect your lottery tickets in most lotteries.
   • Many people think they have a better chance if fewer people participate, but that is only the case if a winning lottery ticket is drawn from all the tickets that participate.
   • The probability that a winning streak matches the one on your ticket is not affected by the number of people who have bought tickets. You can see it this way: if only one person has bought a ticket, will they definitely win? No.

1. Weigh your chances. More people win by letting the computer pick a number (at Lotto), but at the same time more people use a computer generated number. Statistically, the probability is the same for any random combination of numbers. So it doesn't matter whether you choose yourself or not.
