You are quietly being yourself at a party, when someone in the room suddenly starts floating above the ground! You take a look at your drink and realize that ginger beer shouldn't make you hallucinate right away. You put your glasses on your nose and rub your eyes, but that person just keeps floating! You know this is impossible, so it must be a magic trick. You also know that magicians never reveal their secrets. Fortunately, we are not so reluctant and we will be happy to show you how to perform the Balducci levitation!

To step

  1. Hold this position for 2 to 3 seconds and then lower yourself back down. You can use several methods to descend:
    • Turn your hands over so that the palms are facing up and push the air so that you float back to the ground.
    • Clap your hands together and "fall" back to the floor, bending your knees, as if you were falling from a great height.
    • If you're not using your arms as a show tool, nod your head briefly and "fall" back to earth.
    • Exhale briefly, as if venting yourself, then return to the ground.

Tips

  • Turn so they can see your left foot and heel and the back of your right heel. When they see your right toe, they'll see how you're doing it.
  • Levitation is powerful magic. Pretending to be out of breath and weakened after levitation is one way to illustrate how powerful and difficult levitation is.
  • The corner is everything. Practice this in front of the mirror or with another person. Insufficient practice will surely give you away.
  • There is an excellent video called "The Self-Levitation Video" with Michael Maxwell and Paul Harris, which is devoted to the Balducci Levitation and also covers many psychological subtleties that can help convince your audience.
  • Do it subtly. Don't say, "I'm going to float now." Instead, say something like "Now take a good look at my feet" to let the viewer focus on the illusion. Make sure all spectators are only to one side of you.
  • Cut a hole in the shoe of the foot that lifts your body so that the toes and front of your foot can move freely, and your shoe stays in better position. In this way, the viewing angle of the audience is increased (people can then view the trick from more sides)
  • Don't lift your foot too high or this will stand out.
  • This trick is best done at night when there are shadows to hide your right foot. Also try to position yourself so that the shadow hides your foot from the position of the audience.

Warnings

  • Do not show the audience this trick twice.
  • Don't stand too far away or too close; that can reveal what you are doing.
  • Never reveal your secrets. Refer people to wikiHow if they want to know more!
  • Don't level too high or they will see your toes.
