The process of blocking calls will vary depending on the type of phone you are using. iPhones and some Android phones have a number blocking feature built in. Many Android apps can also block calls. If you're getting a lot of calls from unknown or private numbers, contact your carrier to inquire about the blocking options they offer. If you have a land line (landline) line, your carrier may offer you a variety of number blocking options. You can also add your phone number to your region's Do Not Call lists (for US residents) to prevent telemarketers from obtaining your number.

Steps

Method 1 of 6: iPhone

1. 

   
   
   Add the contact you want to block to Contacts. You can only block a number from your contacts list, so you need to add the phone number you want to block to your contacts.

   Open the Settings app. You can block calls directly from iPhone, just iPhone 4 or later, running iOS 7 or later.

   Select "Phone" from within the Settings app. Call actions open.

   Choose "Blocked". You should see a list of recently blocked phone numbers.

   Click "Add New" to add new phone numbers to the list.

   Select a contact to block. Select the contact you just created with the phone number you want to block.

   Use the Do Not Disturb feature to block calls from "Unknown" or "Blocked Number". While iOS doesn't have a built-in feature to block unknown callers, you can use the Do Not Disturb function. Note that this allows people in your contacts to contact you, and those not in your contact list will be blocked, even if their call is legitimate.
   • Open the Settings app.
   • Select "Do Not Disturb."
   • Swipe the Manual option to ON.
   • Tap "Allow Calls From" and select "All Contacts".

   Talk to your carrier about more advanced blocking features. If you want to block an unknown number or need more powerful blocking features, you should contact Customer Service. Your blocking options depend on the specific carrier and current service plan. advertisement

Method 2 of 6: Android devices (Samsung, HTC and LG)

1. 

   Open the Phone app. For Samsung Galaxy, HTC or LG devices, you need to add the phone number to the automatic block or deny list. This feature is integrated with the above devices and you must both have access to either the Phone or the Phone app.
   • If you're using another manufacturer's Android phone, or want to block unknown callers, see the next section.

   Call barring on Samsung phones. After opening the Phone app, you can block calls on most Samsung devices:
   • Click the Expand button or More (⋮) and select "Settings."
   • Tap "Call blocking" or "Call rejection". The name of the task differs depending on your phone model.
   • Click on "Block list" or "Auto reject list".
   • Add the phone number you want to block. You can also add a phone number from the call log. Select the number that calls you, press ⋮ then tap "Block settings".

   Call barring on HTC phones. After opening the Phone app, you can block calls from the call history (Call History).
   • Swipe over the "Call History" tab.
   • Press and hold on the caller you want to block.
   • Select "Block Contact" or "Block caller".

   Call barring on LG phones. You can block calls on LG Android phones from the Phone app.
   • Press the ⋮ button in the Phone app.
   • Select "Call Settings" then tap "Call reject".
   • Press the "Reject calls from" button.
   • Add the phone number you want to block. You can choose from recent calls or from contacts.

5. 

   Talk to your carrier for more blocking options. Your mobile carrier has more powerful blocking features than what you have on your device. Contact your carrier if the blocking options on your Android phone do not meet your needs. The choices will vary depending on the carrier and the plan you use. advertisement

Method 3 of 6: Other Android devices

1. 

   Download a call blocking app. There are many call blocking apps available for Android devices. These apps are useful if your device doesn't support blocking, or you want to block calls from unknown or locked numbers. Some popular applications include:
   • Mr. Number
   • Call Blocker
   • Should I Answer?
   • Extreme Call Blocker

2. 

   Run a call blocking app. The process of blocking numbers depends on the application you choose, but they are generally similar.

   Open the Settings section of the app. You can block unknown and blocked numbers collectively through the blocking application's settings.

4. 

   Choose to block private or unknown numbers. You just need to find these options in the app's settings. Calls from phone numbers displayed as "Private" or "Unknown" on caller information will be blocked.

5. 

   Add a specific number to the block list. You can use the app to add specific numbers or objects from your contact list. This feature will prevent these callers from reaching you.

6. 

   Change schedule options. Many blocking applications allow you to set scheduling options for blocking. You can proceed to block all calls within certain time frames.

7. 

   Talk to your carrier for more blocking options. If the apps are not performing as expected, you can contact your carrier and ask for information about their blocking services. You can reject all unknown calls or add phone numbers to the block list.
   • Note that many prepaid plans do not offer blocking services similar to those of postpaid plans.

Method 4 of 6: Windows Phone

1. 

   Open the Phone app. You can block any dialed number. But you can't block unknown or private numbers unless you contact your carrier.

2. 

   Swipe to the History page. All the calls you have recently received will appear.

3. 

   Press and hold the number you want to block. A menu will appear shortly after.

   Click "Block number". The phone number will be added to the block list.
   • You can see a list of blocked calls by pressing the "..." button in the Phone app and selecting "blocked calls".

5. 

   Check with your carrier for more blocking tools. Your mobile network provider has more elaborate blocking options than what you have on your phone. Call the Customer Service switchboard and ask about available blocking options for your plan. advertisement

Method 5 of 6: Landline Phone Line

1. 

   Contact the operator. Call barring for the fixed line is a feature on the carrier side. To enable this feature, you need to contact your telecommunications carrier and inquire about the options available to you.

2. 

   If you're in the US, consider the Anonymous Call Rejection service. This feature allows you to reject private and blocked calls. You may or may not pay a fee, depending on the carrier.

3. 

   Add phone numbers to the block list. Most carriers allow us to block specific numbers if you are being bothered by someone. This process depends on your carrier.
   • For example, with AT&T mobile carrier or Verizon landline service in the US, you can dial * 60 and follow the instructions in the phone to add a number to your block list.

4. 

   If you are in the US, consider the Priority Ringing feature. This feature allows you to change phone ringer for certain phone numbers to decide whether to listen or not. advertisement

Method 6 of 6: the "Do Not Call" registry (if you reside in the United States)

1. Add your phone number to the region's Do Not Call registry. When you add phone numbers to this list, phone sellers will not be able to call you. You can still receive calls from government and legitimate commercial calls. advertisement
