Perfectly toasted buns are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. You can toast almost any type of sandwich using a variety of methods. You can grill or bake buns in an oven or mini oven, grill them on a hot grill or just put them in the toaster as you do with normal bread. Choose the method that is easiest for you, or experiment with all the methods to find out which method will give you the best sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 1 hamburger bun, hot dog bun, or bun
  • 1 tablespoon (15 grams) butter (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil (optional)

For 1 toasted sandwich

Method 1 of 4: Grilling sandwiches in the oven

  1. Set your oven to the grill setting and let it preheat for 5-10 minutes. Turn the dial on your oven or mini oven to the grill setting. Use the highest grill setting if your oven has multiple settings. Let the oven preheat for 5-10 minutes so that it is hot enough to grill your sandwiches.
    • If you're using a regular oven, make sure you have an oven rack placed in the top slot just below the grill. If you're using a mini oven with multiple slots for grills, tuck the grate into the top slot so the buns are closer to the grill.
  2. Cut the buns in half or pull them apart. Pull pre-cut buns apart to separate the halves. Carefully cut the buns in half with a knife if they are not pre-cut.
    • This method works best if you also grill other foods. That way you already have a hot grill on which to grill the sandwiches.
    • If the buns are supposed to stick together, such as with hot dog buns or long buns, you can open them as far as possible without pulling the halves apart where they are attached.
    • Before grilling, brush the buns with about 1 tablespoon (15 grams) of butter or 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of olive oil to give them more flavor.
  3. Preheat the oven or mini oven to 180 ° C. Set the oven or mini oven to the baking position. Set the temperature to 180 ° C and let the oven preheat for 5-10 minutes.
    • Make sure the oven or mini oven has an oven rack in the middle slot so that you can bake the buns evenly.
  4. Cut the bun in half. Cut the bun in half or pull the two halves apart so you can put them in the toaster. If you need to cut the bun in half, make sure you make the two halves the same size so that the bun fits in the toaster.
    • This method only works with hamburger buns and buns. You need a toaster with openings large enough for the half buns. You cannot use this method to toast hot dog buns and other irregular shaped buns.
    • Do not put butter, olive oil or anything else on the bun before putting it in the toaster. It will just burn and create a lot of smoke and mess.
  5. Set the toaster to a medium temperature or a medium setting. The settings that you can set for the heat and length differ per toaster. Select one of the middle settings to toast the bun so that it does not burn.
    • You can reset the toaster after toasting the first bun to make the next buns stronger or less toasted. With some toasters you can even adjust the heat while toasting.
  6. Let the toaster finish toasting completely. Put the bun halves in the toaster and push the slider down to start the toaster. Wait until the toaster has finished toasting and the bun comes up from the opening.
    • It doesn't matter which direction the bun halves point when you put them in the toaster.
    • Unlike other methods, the half buns will be toasted on both sides, so you get a bun that is drier and more crumbly.

Tip: Toasters differ in power, so look at the top of the toaster to see how brown the bun is. This will ensure that the bun doesn't burn the first time you try this method. If the halves of the bun start to get too dark, press the stop button on the toaster or push the slider to raise the halves.
