Do you feel like starting a scrapbook, log or diary? You can of course buy a notebook in the store. If you really want to make it something special, it might be time to rediscover the still-not-forgotten art of bookbinding. There are many different ways to bind a book, including stapling, gluing, or sewing. The method you choose depends on your project, the time you have and your skills. Whether you want to make a new book or repair your favorite novel, here you will learn how to glue or sew a book in a professional way, regardless of the size of your book.

To step

Method 1 of 5: The beginning of your book

  1. Choose your paper. You can choose any type of paper to make a book. You can use simple printing paper, but also handmade paper and even cardboard. Make sure you have enough pages to fill a book. Usually 50-100 pages are enough. Fold each sheet in half. The number of pages is therefore twice the number of pages you have.
  2. Place the sections on a book. Make sure that the folded edge sticks out just a bit so that you can glue it more easily. You can also use a wooden block or something similar to it instead of a book. Make sure your folded paper extends about 0.5-1 cm. Make sure that the sections remain neatly straight.
  3. Put a weight on top. Put several books on top so that your paper cannot shift. This way, the spine of your book stays straight for gluing. Be careful not to shift the booklets.
  4. Replace a broken spine. If your cover plus nips is still intact, along with your signatures, replace the broken spine without removing the cover. Use scissors to cut out the back, but leave the nips in place. Use the old spine as a measure to cut out a new piece of cardboard to act as the spine. Use two long pieces of bookbinding tape to tape the new spine lengthwise at the front and back.
    • If you want, you can cover the spine in a piece of matching fabric before sticking it back to the cover.
    • If you don't have book binding tape and the look of your book isn't the most important thing to you, you can also use duct tape or packing tape. Book binding tape is useful because it has special corners that help to get the tape right around the corner.
  5. Repair the cover of a paperback. If the cover of one of your paperbacks has come off, smear some line along the entire spine of the signatures and replace the cover. Put some heavy books on top and let it dry completely.
  6. Replace a broken hard cover. If the cover of your book cannot be saved, use the directions above to make a new cover to replace the broken one. You can also choose to buy a new or used book with a hard cover of the same dimensions, cut it loose and use it for your book.

Tips

  • You can use different colors on the corners of your signatures so you don't get confused where to poke holes.
  • You need quite a bit of yarn to sew all the sections together. Of course you can always tie several small pieces together. This can be useful if you don't want to pull a huge amount of yarn through a hole.
