In many Arab countries in the Middle East, "Arabian coffee" is brewed. Each place has its own variation, such as the way the beans are roasted and the spices and flavors that are added. Arabic coffee comes in a special pot, one dallahcooked on the stove, poured into a thermos and served in small cups without earpieces, which finjaan called. It's very different from Western-style coffee, but after a few sips, you'll be serving this coffee to all your guests.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp shrimps Arabian coffee beans
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 tbsp ground or crushed cardamom
  • 5-6 whole cloves (optional)
  • A pinch of saffron (optional)
  • 1 tsp rose water (optional)

To step

Part 1 of 3: Preparing the ingredients

  1. Buy Arabic coffee. You can buy whole roasted coffee beans or ground coffee. Buy light to medium roasted Arabian beans.
    • Some specialty coffee shops and online retailers offer Arabic coffee blends with spices. You cannot adjust the proportions to taste, but it is an easy way to make Arabic coffee.
    • You can also buy Arabian coffee beans that have not yet been roasted and roast them yourself.
  2. Grind the cardamom pods. You can use a mortar and pestle for this or the back of a spoon.
  3. Heat water in the dallah. Use 3 cups of water and heat it over medium heat.
    • If you don't have dallah you can use a saucepan or a Turkish one cezve.
  4. Let the coffee simmer on low heat. After 10-12 minutes, foam will start to form at the top.
    • Do not let the coffee boil or it will burn. Remove the dallah from the heat when the coffee starts to boil. You can also lower the heat slightly before putting the dallah back on the stove.
  5. Turn off the heat and let the pot sit for a while. If you have an electric hob that cools down slowly, you better take the pot off the stove right away.
  6. Return the coffee to the heat and almost bring it to a boil. This will again form foam, as in the previous steps.
  7. Prepare the thermos. Pour the hot water from the preheated thermos. If you use saffron and / or rose water, you can now put it in the empty thermos.
  8. Let the coffee stand for another 5 to 10 minutes before pouring. Use small cups and a tray for a traditional presentation.
    • According to tradition, the cups are only half filled.
    • Arabian coffee is traditionally prepared without sugar, but served with sweets, such as dates.
    • Arabian coffee is drunk without milk. Lightly roasted coffees taste better without milk.

Part 3 of 3: Drinking Arabic coffee

  1. Use your right hand to pour, receive and drink coffee. It is rude to drink with your left hand.
  2. Offer multiple rounds. The guest must accept at least one cup. Normally you drink at least three cups during a visit.
