2 Make a loop by taking the long end of the thread leading to the ball and passing it over the short end. Hold the intersection with your left thumb and forefinger.

3 Take the long end of the thread leading to the ball with your right hand, bring it under the loop and pull it out, making a new loop.

4 Take the new loop with your right hand and tighten until the old loop is tight.

5 Place a new buttonhole on your hook or needle and pull on the long thread to secure the buttonhole to the needle or hook.

1. 1 Unwind the thread about 25 cm.
2. 2 Make a loop of yarn.
3. 3 Place the loop over the loose thread.
4. 4 Pull the thread through the loop.
5. 5 Pull the thread through the loop.
6. 6 Pull the knot tight, keeping the loop at the top loose.

Tips

• Place the loop on a knitting needle or hook and tighten.
• This knot is called a sliding knot because if you pull the loop from the top or the loose thread from the bottom, you can make it larger or smaller.
