Apple iPod Nano requires charging after 8-12 hours of battery use. To charge your device, you can connect it to your computer or to a power outlet via an adapter.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Charge with a computer

1. 1 Find your USB charging cable. A cable is included with your iPod Nano. If you lose your iPod charging cable, you can purchase the cable from Apple.com or buy a multi-purpose cable at most hardware stores and cell phone stores.
   • Initially, the third generation iPod Nano model may come with a FireWire cable, which can also be used to charge your device. Your computer must have at least a 4-pin Firewire port.
2. 2 Turn on your computer. Your computer must have a free USB port.
3. 3 Connect iPod Nano to Apple's USB Charging Cord using the long, flat 30-pin connector on the bottom of iPod Nano.
4. 4 Connect the other end of the cable to a USB port on your computer. Make sure the USB port is directly connected to your computer. You cannot charge your iPod via the USB port on the removable keyboard.
   • You can use a USB hub to charge your device. This device is similar to an extension cable in that it plugs into your USB port and expands the number of ports. You can connect cables or flash drives to it.
5. 5 Make sure the computer will be active for 1 to 4 hours. It takes 4 hours to fully charge the iPod battery. Charging it to 80 percent takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
   • Your device will stop charging when the computer enters standby mode or is turned off. Keep the top cover open on your laptop to keep it awake to fully charge the battery.
6. 6 Sync your iPod while charging. When connecting your device to your computer, remember that you will be able to sync different games or download updates through iTunes.
   • If you set iPod Nano to update or sync automatically, it will do so as soon as it is connected.
   • If your device is set to sync automatically and you don't want this to happen, then you can charge via the power adapter without connecting to a computer.
7. 7 Wait for the power icon on the iPod screen to notify you that "Battery is charged." While charging, you will be able to see on the monitor: "Charging, please wait." Press the eject button on the left side of your iTunes software to safely eject your device when it's fully charged.

Method 2 of 2: Charging from the mains

1. 1 Purchase an Apple Power Adapter. It is a device that has an encrusted USB port. It has standard 2-way output and is compatible with the Apple USB cable.
   • You can also find universal USB power adapters online or at hardware stores.
2. 2 Plug the USB power adapter into a power outlet. You can also plug it into a network cable.
3. 3 Insert the 30-pin connector of the charging cable into iPod Nano.
4. 4 Look at the display on your iPod Nano. You should see the following: "Charging, please wait." If this message is not displayed on the screen, then the device is not properly connected to the outlet or poor connection.
5. 5 Leave it to charge for 1 to 4 hours. Apple says that in order to maintain good battery function, it is not necessary to completely discharge the battery and only then recharge it. Lithium batteries do not require this, such a process is only necessary with nickel-cadmium batteries.

Tips

• If you are using the latest iPod Nano (5th generation) and newer Apple computers, you can purchase a Lightning adapter to connect to select 30-pin accessories. Apple says iPod charges much faster through Lightning adapters than a USB port.
• If you don't use your iPod regularly, it will still need to be charged about once a month. iPod always uses battery power, even when not in use.
• The battery works best in temperatures between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius. Room temperature is best.
