PlayStation Portable (hereinafter referred to as PSP) is a very popular system in the hacker community, since it is easy to get access to it, and there are hundreds of various home-made programs for PSP. This article will teach you how to squeeze the full potential of your PSP.

Method 1 of 3: Understand the Basics

1. 1 Understand what PSP hacking is all about. PSPs are usually hacked in order to gain access to a wide range of self-written programs (from games to tutorials), also known as “Homebrew”.
   • Jailbroken PSPs can also run classic console emulators.
   • On jailbroken PSPs, you can run images of PSP games without actually having an original copy. Of course, this is not for piracy, it is only for legal copies.
2. 2 Know the difference between different types of hacks. PSP has been with us for several years now, so there are many options for hacking it. This console is no longer supported by the manufacturer these days, so a standard hack works for all systems running the latest official firmware.

Method 2 of 3: Preparing to Hack

1. 1 Find your console model number. It is by this number that you will understand which programs will need to be installed during and after the hack. There are two fundamentally different processes, depending on the console model.
   • If you have an older PSP, open the battery compartment. To the right of the Sony logo, you will see an inscription like “PSP-XXXX”. All you need to know is what's behind the first number: 1XXX, 2XXX or 3XXX.
   • If you have a PSP Go, you can find the model number by opening the display and looking at the top left corner. It should say something like N1XXX.
   • Best of all, this is when the serial number is like 2XXX, or when the console is even older. Consoles 3XXX and PSP Go, of course, you can hack - but the choice of tools will be more ... limited.
2. 2 Update your PSP. To start hacking, you first need to update the console firmware to version 6.60. Here you can either use the system update function or download the update from the Sony website.
   • If you chose to download from the site, then copy the downloaded file to your PSP. To do this, connect your console to your computer and copy the file to the PSP / GAME / UPDATE folder. Then run the update file from the console.
   • To copy files to your PSP, you need to put the console in USB mode. After connecting the console to your computer, scroll the PSP menu to the left, go to the settings, then scroll up to select the so-called. "USB mode", after which your console will be perceived by the computer as something like a USB flash drive.
3. 3 Download third party firmware. You will need PRO-C firmware, which can be found ... in many places. Download the files and copy them to your PSP in the PSP / GAME / folder. Yes, in this case the console must be in USB mode too.

Method 3 of 3: Install the firmware

1. 1 Install the copied firmware. Scroll through the “Game” menu, find the “PRO Update” icon and select this item by pressing the “X” button. The screen will turn black and a small menu will appear on it. Click “X” to install the firmware. After a short time, you will receive a message that the installation is complete. Press “X” again to run the firmware.
2. 2 Make changes to the IPL. On PSP models 1XXX and 2XXX, among other things, you will need to run the so-called. “CIPL Flasher”, which can also be found in the “Game” menu. This will make changes to the IPL (Initial Program Loader), a special software module that will change the system settings so that it loads third-party firmware when it is turned on.
3. 3 Start “Fast Recovey”. On PSP models 3XXX and PSP Go, you will need to run the “Fast Recovery” program after each download. This is because you cannot make changes to the IPL once and for all on these consoles. Launching “Fast Recovery” will load your third party firmware after the console boots.
4. 4 Delete your installation files. After you've made your changes to the IPL, congratulations to yourself - you've hacked the PSP. You can now uninstall CIPL Flasher and PRO Update files. Most importantly, do not forget to leave “Fast Recovery” if you have a PSP 3XXX or PSP Go.
