1 Check for drainage problems. Before you do anything, you need to find out why your lawn is uneven, bumpy. This can sometimes be the result of drainage problems or even a pipeline rupture. If major work has been done on your lawn in the past few years, and the lawn is uneven throughout, then this is normal. If there are still 2-3 depressions in areas where there may be water pipes, you should consult with an expert to make sure there is no water leakage.
  • 2 Check the irrigation system. The lawn can become uneven due to improper irrigation system. Check the system before starting lawn restoration. Make sure the sprinklers and rotors are functioning properly and are raised to their full height (usually about 10 cm), nozzles are not damaged or clogged, and the heads are not leaking.
    • Keep in mind that the irrigation system requires maintenance at least once a year, if not more often. You can perform most of the maintenance and repair operations without professional help if you do a little research and if you know the brand of the system or sprinklers.
  • 3 Determine the area to be leveled. Are you leveling just a few small plots, or does your entire yard look awful? If you have a very bumpy yard, it may be better to start from scratch. Decide what you want to do first before wasting a ton of time and effort.
  • 4 Choose a slope for your yard. A level lawn is good and great, but you need to think about the angle of the lawn as well. Experts recommend sloping your yard away from your home to improve drainage. Therefore, by taking up the leveling, you can combine it with changing the slope of the lawn if there are problems with drainage.
  • 5 Determine the depth of the low areas. If the low areas are fairly shallow, that's fine. But, if they are deep, it may be easier to remove the grass from there before filling the groove.
  • 6 Choose the right time to patch your lawn. Try to overhaul your lawn in the spring. This will give the grass seeds time to germinate and provide the moisture they need.
  • Part 2 of 4: Prepare the leveling mixture

    1. 1 Add fertile soil. Buy fertile soil from a good garden store or a soil company.Good soil is the key to creating a stable, level lawn and good grass growth.
    2. 2 Add some sand. A little sand, which you can also buy from a soil company, will give the soil the right consistency and make it more resistant to subsidence.
    3. 3 Add compost or fertilizer. This will make the soil richer in nutrients, which will keep the grass healthy and grow faster.
    4. 4 Prepare the mixture: 2 parts of fertile soil, 2 parts of sand, 1 part of compost.

Part 3 of 4: Filling Lowered Areas

    1. 1 Fill in the lowered areas with the mixture. Find the lowered areas and apply the mixture to them, adding a little more than is necessary for leveling.
    2. 2 Smooth out the mixture with a rake so that the lowered area is evenly filled.
    3. 3 Use your feet and the end of a rake to trample the area to compact the soil. You can also rent a rammer from your local home improvement store. With this technique, you will align better and with greater assurance that these areas will not sag again.
    4. 4 Add water. Water the soil lightly to compact it.
    5. 5 Let it settle. The soil takes a significant amount of time to settle: at least a few days, and preferably a week or more.

    Part 4 of 4: Overseeding

    1. 1 Sow lawn grass seeds. Use the right amount of lawn grass seeds that are optimal for your lawn and your region. Sow seeds with a manual seeder, especially if a large area needs to be planted. Distribute the seeds, but don't sow too much.
    2. 2 Add fertile soil. Scatter some fertile soil, 1.5-2 cm, over the seeds. This will provide better contact with the soil, help to retain moisture, and also protect the seeds from being eaten by birds.
    3. 3 Compact the soil slightly. Press down on the soil you added with your hand.
    4. 4 Water frequently. Water this soil by lightly sprinkling it 4 times a day for at least the next 48 hours to help the seeds germinate.
    5. 5 Add seeds as needed. Wait for the grass to grow. If there are still bare spots, top up the grass. Enjoy your flat lawn!

    Tips

    • Be sure to level your lawn when removing and replacing turf. Before replacing sod or sowing grass, use a wide rake or even a plank (tie both ends of the plank to a rope and pull it behind you) to get a level surface.
    • Do this only in early spring or fall.
