Installing a shelf in your shower room will allow you to store soaps and shampoos without having to store them on the floor or on the edge of the tub. The methods will differ depending on the type of shower stall and the shelf you want to install.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Install a shelf in a tiled shower using silicone

You can easily glue the ceramic shelf in the corner of a tiled shower using silicone and foam.

  1. 1 Purchase a flat-sided ceramic corner shelf from a tile store or hardware store.
  2. 2 Clean the corner where you plan to install the shelf using cleaning products that remove soapy water and dry the area completely before installing. If foam or moisture remains on the tile, the silicone may not be able to do its job.
  3. 3 Apply double-sided tape to the flanges on the sides of the shelf.
  4. 4 Check the shelf before removing the plastic strip that covers the duct tape. If the shelf is not flush with the corner, then add an extra layer of tape until the level is level.
  5. 5 Apply silicone tightly around the shelf perimeter by squeezing from the tube or using a special nail gun. Do not smooth the silicone.
  6. 6 Remove the outer paper covering from the tape.
  7. 7 Hang the shelf on the wall between the tile seams. Make sure the horizontal lines of the tile do not go under the silicone. Press the shelf against the corner until the tape grips.
  8. 8 Slide your finger across the joints of the tile shelf to smooth out any unevenness. Use a damp washcloth to wipe off any excess silicone.
  9. 9 Give the silicone time to cure, after about 24-48 hours you can shower again.

Method 2 of 3: Install a shelf in a tiled shower room using hardware

Glass shelves are often sold with mounting hardware. You can install this kind of shelves using a few simple tools.

  1. 1 Wash the walls of the shower room using a cleaning agent that removes soapy streaks. Dry the wall completely after you finish cleaning.
  2. 2 Pick a spot where your corner shelf will be and keep it level with the tiles. Mark with a pencil where the screws will go into the tile and use a spirit level to make sure the shelf will not tilt.
  3. 3 Place a double layer of adhesive tape over the pencil marks you made on the tile. When you drill holes in the tiles, the tape will help the drill bit more firmly.
  4. 4 Place the concrete bit on top of the drill and slowly drill holes in the tiles through the duct tape. Do not press too hard when drilling to prevent the tiles from breaking or cracking.
  5. 5 Repeat the process until all holes are drilled.
  6. 6 Remove the adhesive tape.
  7. 7 Insert plastic anchors into the holes.
  8. 8 Screw the shelf to the wall by screwing the screws into the plastic anchors with a screwdriver.

Method 3 of 3: Install a fiberglass shower shelf using hardware

Fiberglass shower enclosures aren't strong enough to hold a shelf, so you'll have to use fixing bolts. Apply light pressure as you drill the holes in case pipes pass behind the cab upholstery.

  1. 1 Clean your shower with cleaning products that remove soapy streaks. Dry it thoroughly.
  2. 2 Place the shelf against the wall and use a pencil to mark where you want to drill holes. Use a level to make sure your shelf won't tilt.
  3. 3 Start by drilling 3/16 "(5mm.) in fiberglass with a core drill. If your drill goes through the plywood, then stainless steel screws can be inserted into the holes. If your drill will not go through the plywood, drill 3/8 "(10mm) holes.
  4. 4 Insert 1/8 "(3mm.) mounting bolts in the holes you drilled.
  5. 5 Blow out the silicone on the back of your shelf where it is screwed in. This will help strengthen the fasteners.
  6. 6 Raise the shelf 1 "(2.5 cm) from the wall and insert the screws into the holes, screw them in with a long screwdriver. Do not press the shelf against the wall until the screws are securely screwed in. Otherwise, they will simply rotate in the holes.
  7. 7 7. Use a damp washcloth to wipe off any excess silicone that has squeezed out from under the shelf.

Tips

  • Use brass screws when installing the shelf in the shower instead of steel screws. Steel screws will corrode and stain your shower stall.

Warnings

  • Avoid using a drill to tighten the screws when screwing the shelf to the wall. Too much speed can break your tile or fiberglass.
