1 Decide which part of the wiper mechanism needs to be replaced. The wiper mechanism includes a lever and a rubber-insert brush that is attached to the lever.
  • If the brush does not press against the glass with sufficient force or is bent, you will need to replace the entire brush.
  • 2 Buy the correct brush for your car model from an auto parts store. Ask the staff to help you choose your brushes, or alternatively measure your old brushes and bring them to the store with you.
    • Remember that the left and right brushes may have different lengths.
  • 3 Pull back the wiper arm and place it in a standing position. Rotate the brush perpendicular to the arm. Repeat the procedure with the second lever.
    • Some wiper mechanisms are only a few centimeters away from the glass. If this is the case in your case, then do not make an effort to pull them further away from the glass.
    • On some vehicles, it may be easier to turn on the wipers and turn off the ignition when they are in motion. This will allow you to raise the lever and make it easier to remove the brush from it.
  • Part 2 of 3: Replacing the wiper blades

    1. 1 Remove the brush from the arm. Locate the small latch on the underside of the brush (where the brush meets the arm), then push (or pull as required in some cases) to release it.Pull the brush down - it should come off the metal hook on the arm.
      • You may need to tap or pull the brush harder to remove if dirt or corrosion has accumulated at the joint.
      • Sometimes the brush is easier to remove by pressing it into the lever, pressing the latch, and then removing it from the lever.
      • The levers are now bare pieces of metal. If left standing, they can spring back and damage the windshield. Therefore, for your own peace of mind, carefully lower them on the glass and leave them there until you are ready to put new brushes on them.
      • For greater reliability, place rags under them so that the levers rest on the glass through them.
    2. 2 Take a new brush. If the left and right brushes are of different lengths, do not mix up the sides of the brushes. Press down the movable latch on the new brush until it is in a perpendicular position.
    3. 3 Place the new brush against the arm parallel to it so that the hook of the arm can be inserted into the hole in the brush. Insert the hook of the lever into the hole in the brush.
      • The hook should be facing the brush itself.
    4. 4 Pull the brush up until you hear a clicking sound. Carefully lower the wiper blade onto the windshield to its normal position.
      • Repeat the procedure with the second brush.
    5. 5 Check the angle of the arm. If the arm is at the wrong angle, the wipers may knock. In the middle position, the brushes should be at an angle of 90 °. The average position is taken into account, since when driving on the windshield from top to bottom, the angle will change due to the curved shape of the glass.
    6. 6 Switch on the ignition and spray the windshield with washer fluid to check that the brushes are installed correctly.
      • If new brushes leave streaks, first try wiping them with alcohol wipes or a cloth dampened with mineral spirits. If, after that, the brushes rub the glass unevenly, check that they are installed correctly. Make sure you put them on the right sides, check the orientation. If all else fails, stop by an auto parts store and ask for help.

Part 3 of 3: Replacing the rubber insert

    1. 1 Start by locating the tabs at the ends of the brush - they should protrude slightly.
      • Press down on the latches to disassemble the brush. If it is difficult to manually push the latches, use a pair of sharp-nosed pliers.
      • On some models, the brush must be completely removed from the arm to replace the insert.
    2. 2 Pull the rubber insert off the slider. After releasing the locks, completely pull the rubber insert off the brush slider.
      • The wiper blade has no rubber, and if left standing, it can spring back, damaging the windshield. Therefore, for safety, gently place a bare brush against the glass until you are ready to attach new rubber to it. For greater reliability, place an additional cloth under the brush.
    3. 3 Take a new rubber insert. If the left and right wiper mechanisms have different blade lengths, do not mix up the inserts. Insert the new rubber band into the brush from the same end from which you pulled the old one out.
      • When inserting the elastic, be sure to clamp it with the clips. Make sure it is held securely in place by them.
    4. 4 Gently lower the wiper blade onto the windshield to its normal position, then repeat the procedure with the second rubber insert.
      • If the renewed brushes leave streaks, first try wiping them with alcohol wipes or a cloth dampened with mineral spirits. If, after that, the brushes rub the glass unevenly, check that they are installed correctly. Make sure you put them on the right sides, check the orientation. If all else fails, stop by an auto parts store and ask for help.

    Tips

    • Before replacing the wiper blades, you can turn on the ignition, start the wipers, and turn off the ignition when they are halfway up.This will make it a little easier to remove the brushes.
    • For more information on buying and replacing the correct wiper blades, refer to your vehicle's manual.
    • Many auto parts stores will install them for free when you buy new wiper blades.
