Restoring your Xbox 360 to factory settings will erase all existing data and restore the console to its default settings. Your Xbox 360 can be formatted using the options in your console's menu.

To step

  1. Turn on your Xbox console and television.
  2. Select “System Settings” from the Xbox home screen.
    • On some versions of the Xbox 360, you may need to select “Settings” and then “System”.
  3. Select “Console Settings.
  4. Select “System Info.
  5. Write down the serial number of your Xbox.
    • You can also find the serial number on the back of the console itself, or on the inside of the oval lid on the front.
  6. Press the “B” button twice on your Xbox controller to return to System Settings.
  7. Select “Storage” or “Memory.
  8. Go to “Hard Drive” and press the “Y” button on your controller. Now the Device Options menu appears on the screen.
  9. Select “Format.
  10. Select “Yes” when asked to confirm that you want to delete all content from your Xbox.
  11. Enter the serial number of your Xbox 360 when prompted by your console.
  12. Select “Done. Your Xbox 360 will now be reset to factory settings.

  • Reset your Xbox 360 prior before selling or giving it away to prevent others from accessing your personal information.

Warnings

  • Formatting and resetting your Xbox 360 will delete all data on the console. Before formatting, move any data you want to keep from your Xbox 360 to an external hard drive or USB stick. The “Transfer” option can be found in the Device Options screen.
