GTA V is the largest game in the Grand Theft Auto series to date and is available on two discs on the Xbox 360. Fortunately, thanks to the installation process of the game, after the first installation, you no longer have to change discs. To install the game, you will need to free up space on your console's hard drive. If you have an Xbox 360 Arcade or Xbox 360 Core, then you will have to install the game to an external hard drive because the internal drive of these Xbox models does not have enough disk space.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Cleaning up the place

  1. 1 Check how much free space is available on your console's hard drive. GTA V requires 8GB of hard drive space on the Xbox 360.
    • Press the Guide button on your controller.
    • Open the "Settings" tab and select the "System" option.
    • From the System Options menu, select the Storage option.
    • In this window, you will see the amount of free space on all connected storage devices. GTA V must be installed on an Xbox 360 hard drive or USB drive.
  2. 2 Delete the files you no longer need. Uninstall games that you no longer need or are not playing to free up space on your hard drive. To install the game, your hard drive must have at least 8 GB of free space, and preferably 10 GB.
    • Select the drive you want to delete something from.
    • Select the category that contains the files you want to delete. The screen will display the amount of disk space that each category occupies.
    • Select the file you want to delete and then select "Delete". You will be asked to confirm the deletion of the file.
    • Do the same for all files you want to delete.
  3. 3 Use a USB drive if you're having trouble freeing up enough space, or if you have a 4GB Xbox 360 or Xbox 360 Arcade / Core. The memory capacity of these Xbox 360 models is only 4GB and cannot be replaced with a new hard drive. Connect a USB storage device to add more storage space.
    • If you decide to install the game on a USB flash drive, its memory must be at least 16 GB. It should also be a USB 2.0 flash drive with a read speed of 15 MB / sec. To get the best gaming performance, use a brand new USB drive.
    • Make sure the console is updated to the latest version.
    • Insert your flash drive or hard drive into the USB port on the console.
    • Press the Guide button on your controller. Select "Settings" and then "System". In the "System Settings" menu, click on the "Storage" option.
    • Select "USB Mass Storage Device" and then click on the "Configure Now" option to format the drive.

Part 2 of 2: Installing the Game: Troubleshooting

  1. 1 Insert the first game disc into your console. Make sure to insert the first disc as it is the installation disc.
  2. 2 Open the Home tab in the Control Panel, select Play Grand Theft Auto V, then press A on your controller. After that, the installation of the game will begin.
    • If you accidentally inserted Disc 2, the system will ask you to insert Disc 1.
  3. 3 Select the drive where GTA V will be installed. Make sure that the selected drive has at least 8 GB of free space.
  4. 4 Wait for the installation to complete. This will take some time as the drive will be placing a lot of data on the drive. Look at the indicator in the lower right corner of the screen to see the progress of the installation.
  5. 5 Insert Disc 2 when asked. When the installation is complete, you will see the message "Please insert Disk 2". You don't have to go back to the Control Panel to do this. Remove the first disc from the console and then insert the second to start playing.
  6. 6 Do not install Disk 2. You can install any game disc on your Xbox 360 hard drive. While some games benefit from additional content, installing content from a second GTA V disc will result in performance degradation while playing.
  7. 7 Insert Disc 2 when you want to play. Once GTA V is installed, start playing by inserting the second disc into your console. After installing the game, you will no longer need Disc 1.

Trouble-shooting

  1. 1 Error "Problem with storage device". This error can appear during installation or during the launch of GTA V.
    • It is often caused by the failure of a storage device or flash drive that does not meet the minimum requirements. Make sure you are using USB version 2.0 or higher and the read speed is at least 15 Mbps.
    • Reinstalling the game might also fix the problem. Delete the game data in the Storage menu and try to install it again.
    • The problem may be caused by a hard drive failure in the console. If the game is installed on a hard drive, try installing it on a USB drive.
  2. 2 The game freezes while playing or installing. This could be caused by an issue with the Xbox 360 system cache. Clearing the cache might fix the problem. Clearing the cache will not delete game or save data, but you will need to re-download updates that were installed after installing the game.
    • Press the Guide button on your controller. Select "Settings" and then "System". In the System Settings menu, click on the Storage option.
    • Select any drive and press Y. It doesn't matter which drive you choose, as the cache will be deleted on all storage devices.
    • Select "Clear System Cache" and then click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
    • Try reinstalling GTA V after clearing your system cache.
