When it comes to flooring, most people use the terms linoleum and vinyl interchangeably. However, in reality, these words describe completely different materials. Vinyl is a petroleum-based material made up of different inorganic chemical compounds, while linoleum is an environmentally friendly product made from flaxseed oil, compressed flax seeds, pine resin (for stickiness) and jute fibers, which is a renewable resource. Although the two products are comparable in price, linoleum is stronger and more durable.

Steps

  1. 1 Remove the skirting boards. Remove any skirting boards and outlets that might get damaged during the installation of the linoleum.
  2. 2 Remove your current floor covering. Examine the subfloor to ensure that the surface is in adequate condition for installing linoleum. If the subfloor is uneven or damaged, it is best to cover it with thin birch plywood to give it a fresh and clean look.
    • Connect the plywood sheets together with a pneumatic stapler, stapling them along the edges every 20 centimeters.
  3. 3 Determine the center of the room. Find the center point of the two opposite walls, and then duplicate the process for the remaining two opposite walls to divide the room into four quadrants.
    • The square will tell you if the squares have even 90 degree angles. Change the squares as needed.
  4. 4 Start laying the linoleum sheets on the floor, starting in the center of the room. Lay the linoleum away from the center of the room. Do not rush to glue the linoleum until you put it all down and see the end result.
  5. 5 Glue one section of linoleum at a time. Since linoleum is breathable and can shrink and expand slightly from the glue, leave a few centimeters from each edge without glue until all the linoleum has been laid down.
  6. 6 Wait about 30 minutes before moving on to the next linoleum sheet. Glue the adjacent parts by slightly lifting the previously laid linoleum and glue the edge to which the new sheet will be glued.
    • Apply glue to the new sheet in the same way as the previous one, leaving a few centimeters clean at the edges. Place it on the floor and wait 30 minutes.
  7. 7 Repeat the entire process of laying linoleum until you reach the edges of the room. Be productive as the glue dries pretty quickly.
  8. 8 Using a ruler and utility knife, cut the edges of the linoleum along the walls. Remember that linoleum may shrink.
  9. 9 Walk over the laid linoleum with a 45 kg roller to smooth out air bubbles and securely adhere the linoleum to the floor.
  10. 10 Finish the linoleum installation by applying a protective layer to it, which will give it a shine and prolong its durability.
  11. 11 Reattach the baseboards and outlets to complete your linoleum installation project.

Tips

  • If you are using linoleum sheets, cut off the edges of the sheets with a serrated knife. This will make it easier for you to bond the sheets together.

Warnings

  • Linoleum glue takes 72 hours to dry completely. Never walk on it or place furniture on the linoleum until enough time has passed. Otherwise, you can leave various dents on the linoleum.
