Sugaring, or sugar depilation, is one of the ways to remove hair from the body using sugar. Sugar wax is generally safe and can remove unwanted hair. However, after shugaring, you need to properly care for your skin. The day after shugaring, certain activities (such as vigorous exercise) should be avoided. Ingrown hairs can sometimes appear. Deal with these situations quickly and talk to your dermatologist about how you can prevent this from happening in the future.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Skin Care

  1. 1 Wear loose-fitting clothing. On the days following the shugaring procedure, choose loose-fitting clothing. This is especially true after shugaring the bikini area or Brazilian hair removal. The skin after shugaring is very sensitive, so choose loose clothing for the procedure and for wearing for several days after it.
  2. 2 After the procedure, gently moisturize the treated area. Sugaring can cause dry skin, so be sure to moisturize your skin after the procedure. If you are going for another shugaring procedure in the near future, then moisturizing your skin is especially important.
    • Moisturize your skin with natural oils, not lotions with chemicals.Natural oils and body butter creams work well.
    • Do not moisturize your skin on the day of the procedure. Start moisturizing your skin no earlier than a day later.

Sugaring is very gentle on the skin. Unlike wax depilation, sugar depilation does not cause hypersensitivity or skin reactions. Therefore, you only need to moisturize the skin as you would after any hair removal method.

  3. 3 Make a Dead Sea salt compress. Ingrown hairs are a common problem associated with sugaring. To prevent ingrown hairs, treat your skin with Dead Sea salt water for the first 24 to 48 hours after your procedure. You can buy Dead Sea salt online or at your local beauty supply store.
    • Fill a sink with cold water and add 2-4 tablespoons of salt. Take a clean towel and soak it with a little saline solution.
    • Apply a cold compress to the areas from which hair was removed and leave for about 15 minutes.
  4. 4 Scrub the skin 24–48 hours after sugaring. Exfoliation is a very important part of the post-sugar waxing process. After the procedure, you need to exfoliate the skin 2-7 times a week. To do this, use an exfoliating gel that you can buy at a beauty supply store or pharmacy. You can also use a walnut scrub, pumice stone, or exfoliating glove.
    • It is best to exfoliate your skin while showering. Apply the gel to the skin from which hair has been removed. Rub vigorously enough to soften the skin.
    • When finished, rinse with water and pat dry after leaving the shower.

Part 2 of 3: Avoid Certain Activities

  1. 1 Don't touch your skin. For a few days after the procedure, the skin is likely to be very sensitive and also more prone to infections. Even if you're tempted to scratch your itchy skin, don't do it, or you risk causing further irritation.
    • If you feel like scratching your skin, try cutting your nails very short. You can also tape your nails to prevent scratching.
  2. 2 Avoid exercise after the procedure. Because sweating and skin irritation can increase during exercise, do not exercise immediately after shugaring. Do a workout before your procedure, if necessary. You can also sign up for sugaring on a day when you don't usually exercise.
    • Discuss the issue of training with the employee of the salon where you received shugaring. The start of your workouts will depend on where your hair was removed from.
  3. 3 Do not take baths or hot tubs. Hot water can irritate sensitive skin. Bacteria build up in the bath, especially the hot tub. And your skin will be susceptible to infections. In addition, you should not do this, because it can burn the exposed hair follicles and thereby slow down the healing process. Shower and use warm water.
  4. 4 Stay out of the sun and tanning beds. The skin after shugaring is very sensitive to UV radiation and can burn easily. Avoid the sun as much as possible for 24 hours after your procedure. And you should refrain from going to the solarium.
    • If the skin is burnt in the sun, then you should not do sugar depilation. Wait for the skin to heal for the procedure.
  5. 5 If you have pubic hair removed, abstain from sex for 24 hours. After shugaring, the body will be more susceptible to infections. If you have removed your pubic hair using shugaring, then do not have sex for at least 24 hours after the procedure. This will give your skin and hair enough time to heal.

Part 3 of 3: Watch for complications

  1. 1 Don't worry about red dots. It takes 1-2 days for the skin to recover from shugaring. Often, after shugaring, red dots appear on the treated areas. These points form where the hair root was removed. They may look like a sunburn. Don't worry about these points - they will go away on their own in a few days.
  2. 2 Treat ingrown hairs. Get rid of ingrown hairs quickly whenever and if they appear. If left untouched, hairs can cause severe skin irritation. You can use topical gels to combat ingrown hairs, which are available from your local beauty supply store. If the problem of ingrown hair cannot be resolved on your own, then consult a dermatologist.
    • Regular sea salt compresses after sugaring can help prevent ingrown hairs.
  3. 3 In case of infection, see a dermatologist. If you notice redness, itching, burning, or other symptoms that persist within 1–2 days, see a dermatologist. Sugaring is usually a safe procedure, but it can make your skin more susceptible to infections. If you have a rash that you suspect may be infected, make an appointment with a dermatologist.

Tips

  • If you are sugaring your bikini area, be sure to wear soft and comfortable underwear for the next few days. In particular, avoid prickly laces or tight elastic bands that can irritate the hair follicles.
  • Use a mild or organic soap for a few days after your procedure. You should also avoid perfumed lotions and perfumes.
