OS X Lion introduces a new application management feature called LaunchPad. Unfortunately, removing apps from LaunchPad is a complicated process. Removing apps purchased from the App Store is easy, but there are apps like Safari or Mail that the operating system won't allow you to uninstall. To uninstall these applications, you will have to enter a few simple commands in the terminal.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Remove Apps Purchased from the App Store

  1. 1 Launch Launchpad. To do this, click on the gray LaunchPad icon in the Dock.
  2. 2 Select the app you want to uninstall. Click on the program icon and hold it until it starts to shake.
  3. 3 Click on the small "X" in the corner of the app. If “X” does not appear, then you are either not logged in as an administrator or the app was not purchased from the Mac App Store.
  4. 4 Click "Delete" when asked to confirm the action. This will remove the application from your computer.

Method 2 of 2: Uninstalling Applications via Terminal

  1. 1 Open Terminal. To do this, open Finder and select Go and then Utilities. In the window that appears, select the black square called "Terminal". You can also click on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the screen and type the word "terminal".
  2. 2 Enter the following command: sqlite3 ~ / Library / Application Support / Dock / *. db "DELETE from apps WHERE title =’ APPNAME ’;" && killall Dock. For example, if you are trying to uninstall an application named "LEMON", then you must enter the following command: sqlite3 ~ / Library / Application Support / Dock / *. Db "DELETE from apps WHERE title =" LEMON ";" && killall Dock. To find out the exact name of an application, find it in the Applications folder. After entering the above command, press the Enter key.
  3. 3 Check if the app was successfully uninstalled. After entering the uninstall command, Launchpad should update and the application itself should disappear.

Tips

  • Scroll through application pages in Launchpad by holding down the mouse button and moving the mouse cursor to the right or left, or using two-finger swipes on the trackpad.
  • You can launch Launchpad in OS X Lion using shortcuts or hot corners after configuring them in System Preferences.

Warnings

  • OS X Lion is only available as a downloadable update from the Mac App Store.
