- Freezing the gum is the most successful way to remove it, as it does not penetrate deep into the carpet fibers.
- Make sure the gum is frozen through and not just outside, otherwise you will not be able to follow the next steps.

Method 2 of 3: Removing chewing gum with oils
1 Test on an inconspicuous area of carpet before removing chewing gum with oils. Some oils can discolor the carpet. First, apply a small amount of oil to an inconspicuous area and watch to see if the color of the carpet changes. Try one of the following oils to remove gum from carpet:
- Eucalyptus oil
- Olive oil
- Peanut butter
- WARNING: You will need to remove any residual oil from the carpet after you have removed the gum from the carpet.
2 Apply the oil to the gum with a cloth. Do not pour the oil directly onto the carpet, soak a clean rag in the oil and place it on the gum to help you control where the oil is applied. Hold the buttered cloth on the gum to dissolve it.
3 Gently scrape off the rubber band from the carpet with a butter knife. Move the knife in one direction to avoid damaging the carpet. Every time you clean the knife blade after you remove some of the gum, so as not to smudge it on the carpet. If you scrape the carpet back and forth, you ruin it.
4 Clean the carpet with soapy water. After you clean the gum from the carpet, there may be some residual oil on the carpet. Mix a teaspoon of grease-removing dishwashing liquid and 1 liter of water, and clean the carpet with a cloth dampened with soapy water.
Method 3 of 3: Using other solutions to remove chewing gum
1 Apply dry cleaning solution, citrus-based degreaser, or mineral alcohol (such as white spirit) to the gum. These substances will dissolve the polymer compounds in the chewing gum, reducing its sticky properties, so it can be easily removed from the carpet. Apply the solution to a clean cloth and rub over the gum. You can also use solutions containing methyl salicylate as a solvent.
- Always test the substance on an inconspicuous area of the carpet to make sure there are no marks left on the carpet after removing the gum.
2 Give the solvent time to act on the gum. Wait 5-10 minutes, depending on the hardness of the gum, before removing it. During this time, solvents will break the polymer bonds in the chewing gum, thereby weakening its adhesiveness.
3 Scrape the gum off the carpet with a dull butter knife. Try to scrape the elastic in one direction to avoid damaging the structure of the carpet.
4 Prepare a solution of 1 tablespoon of detergent and 1 tablespoon of warm water, apply this solution to a sponge and scrub the carpet. Remove residual solvent from carpet with soapy water. Dry your carpet with an absorbent towel and enjoy a clean carpet!
Tips
- The freezing method works well with fresh gum; use oils or solvents to remove deep-seated or stubborn gum pieces.
- If you are unable to remove the gum from the carpet, contact a carpet cleaning service where it will be removed using professional equipment.
- Lemon juice will also help remove sticky gum residue.
Warnings
- Never Do not rub the carpet while cleaning, as this will destroy the fiber structure and the carpet pattern. You will also make the situation worse by rubbing the elastic forever deeper into the carpet.
- Always Check oils and solvents on an inconspicuous area of the carpet to make sure they don't leave more stains after removing the gum.
