Through this wikiHow article, you will learn how to delete messages from WhatsApp chats or delete chats entirely.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Delete single messages

1. 1 Open WhatsApp. The application icon looks like a green square with a white tube inside the dialog bubble.
2. 2 Click on Chats. The chats tab is either at the bottom of the window (on iPhone) or at the top of the window (on Android).
   • If another conversation is open in WhatsApp, then first click on the "Back" button in the upper left corner of the screen.
3. 3 Click on the conversation you want. This will open up a certain conversation.
4. 4 Press and hold the message you want to delete. Soon, a pop-up options bar will appear above the message itself (on iPhone) or at the top of the screen (on Android).
5. 5 Press ►. It's on the right side of the pop-up menu.
   • On Android, you need to tap on the trash can icon at the top of the screen.
6. 6 Click Remove. This option is located either on the right side of the drop-down menu (on iPhone) or in the pop-up window (on Android).
   • Clicking "Delete" in Android will permanently remove the message from the conversation.
7. 7 Click on the trash can icon. It's in the lower-left corner of the screen.
   • You can select other messages that you want to delete, you just need to click on them.
8. 8 Click Delete Message. This option is located at the bottom of the screen. This will delete the selected message in the conversation history.
   • If you delete multiple messages, the window will say "Delete [number] messages".

Method 2 of 4: Deleting a Conversation

1. 1 Open WhatsApp. The application icon looks like a green square with a white tube inside the dialog bubble.
2. 2 Click on Chats. The chats tab is either at the bottom of the window (on iPhone) or at the top of the window (on Android).
   • If another conversation is open in WhatsApp, then first click on the "Back" button in the upper left corner of the screen.
3. 3 Click Edit. It's in the upper-left corner of the screen.
   • If you have Android then skip this step.
4. 4 Click on Conversation. This is how you choose the conversation.
   • On Android, press and hold the desired conversation.
   • You cannot delete a chat group using this method.
5. 5 Click Remove. It's in the lower-right corner of the screen.
   • On Android, tap the trash can icon at the top of the screen.
6. 6 Click Delete Chat. This option will appear at the bottom of the screen. This will remove the conversation from the Chats page.
   • On Android, this option is simply called "Delete".

Method 3 of 4: Deleting All Conversations

1. 1 Open WhatsApp. The application icon looks like a green square with a white tube inside the dialog bubble.
2. 2 Click Settings. The option is in the lower right corner of the screen.
   • If you have Android, then press the button ⋮ in the upper right corner of the screen, then click Settings.
   • If another conversation is open in WhatsApp, then first click on the "Back" button in the upper left corner of the screen.
3. 3 Click Chats. This option is in the center of the screen.
4. 4 Click Delete All Chats. This button is at the bottom of the screen.
   • If you want to keep the conversation, but want to delete all messages in it, then click "Clear all chats".
5. 5 Enter your phone number. You must enter your phone number in the field where it says "your phone number" in the center of the screen.
   • On Android, this option may not be available.
6. 6 Click Delete All Chats. This will remove all non-group conversations from the Chats page.
   • If you select "Clear All Chats", then all conversations will still be saved on the "Chats" page, but all messages in them will be deleted.

Method 4 of 4: Leaving a Group Conversation

1. 1 Open WhatsApp. The application icon looks like a green square with a white tube inside the dialog bubble.
2. 2 Click Chats. The chats tab is either at the bottom of the window (on iPhone) or at the top of the window (on Android).
   • If another conversation is open in WhatsApp, then first click on the "Back" button in the upper left corner of the screen.
3. 3 Click on a group conversation. You can scroll down to find the group you want. All conversations in the application are ordered according to the time of the last conversation.
4. 4 Click on the group name. It is indicated in the upper left corner of the screen, to the right of the "Back" arrow.
5. 5 Scroll down and tap Leave group. This button is at the bottom of the page. By this action you will remove yourself from the group, and the group itself from the "Chats" page.
   • Since you cannot delete a group chat, logging out is the only way to permanently remove it from the Chats page.
