Carpet is prone to almost every type of stain due to wear and tear. While common stains include dirt, spilled drinks, food, and pet marks, carpet can also be stained by spilled water. The reason for this is that the tiny crystals that are in the water can be seen when the water dries up. In addition, water droplets can lead to mold growth under the carpet. Fortunately, carpet water stains are one of the easiest stains to clean. Follow these tips to remove carpet stains with normal household cleaning products.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Remove water stains after drying

  1. 1 Make a solution to remove dried water stains. Pour equal amounts of distilled white vinegar and warm water into a container.
  2. 2 Dampen a clean, white cloth with the vinegar mixture. The vinegar will discolor the edges of the carpet stain.
  3. 3 Lightly rub the mixture onto the water stain. Do not rub the fabric into the carpet. Let the mixture cover the top edges of the stain. Don't wet the carpet again.
  4. 4 Let the carpet dry completely. If the stain is still visible, repeat the process.

Method 2 of 2: Remove water stain when wet

  1. 1 Soak up the water. Blot the water with a white, clean cloth. If there is a puddle of water, use a cloth to soak up as much water as possible. Do not scrub back and forth over the entire area, as this will only push the water further into the carpet.
  2. 2 Prepare paper towels. Fold a few paper towels in half to make a stack about 1/8 inch (0.3 cm) thick.
  3. 3 Cover the damp area with paper towels. Place paper towels over the stain and cover them with a heavy object such as a book. Leave paper towels for 12 hours or overnight.
  4. 4 Remove the towels. Replace the carpet by fluffing it with a soft brush.
  5. 5 Use a steam iron. If the stain persists, use the steam from the iron, holding it 6 inches (15 cm) above the stain. Do not let the water from the iron fall on the carpet.
