If Skype stores the history of your long-term correspondence, this is not very good from a security point of view, especially if the correspondence contains confidential information. Therefore, we recommend that you regularly delete your Skype history.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Skype on Windows

There are two versions of Skype for Windows - the classic version that most people use, and the Metro version for Windows 8 users (in this version, Skype uses the Metro interface).

Classic version

1. 1 Start Skype. If necessary, log into your account by entering your username and password.
2. 2 Open the settings. Click Tools> Preferences.
3. 3 Click on the "Privacy" tab. It's in the left pane and is marked with a padlock icon.
4. 4 Click "Clear History". This button is on the right side of the "Save History" section.
   • In the window that opens, click "Delete" to confirm your actions.
5. 5 Click "Save" to save your changes. You will find this button in the lower right corner of the Cancel button. You will be returned to the main Skype window, and the old correspondence will be deleted.

Metro version

1. 1 Start Skype. If necessary, log into your account by entering your username and password. In Windows 8, the Skype Metro icon is on the Start screen.
   • To open this screen, click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner and then click on the "Skype" tile (if necessary, scroll to find it).
2. 2 Display the Settings button. It is necessary to click on the "Settings" button, which is located on the Charms bar (on the same panel there is a button to turn off the computer). To display the Settings button, do one of the following:
   • Click on ⊞ Win+C, and then click on "Settings" (this option is marked with a gear icon).
   • Move your mouse pointer to the lower-right corner, then move the pointer up and click Settings.
   • If you have a touchscreen, swipe from right to left, then tap Settings.
3. 3 Click Options. This link will appear when you click on "Settings".
4. 4 Click "Clear History". You will find this blue button under the Privacy section.
   • In the window that opens, click "Clear history" again to confirm your actions, or click outside the window to cancel deleting history.
   • Now click on the backward arrow icon located in the upper left corner to return to the main Skype window.

Method 2 of 3: Skype on macOS

1. 1 Start Skype. If necessary, log into your account by entering your username and password.
2. 2 Open the settings. Open the Skype menu at the top of the screen (next to the apple icon) and select Settings.
   • You can also click ⌘ Command+,.
3. 3 Click on the "Privacy" tab. It's at the top of the window and is marked with a Do Not Disturb icon.
4. 4 Click Delete Chat History. You will find this option under the "Save chat history for" option.
   • Click Delete All to confirm your actions.
   • Now just close the preferences window.

Method 3 of 3: Skype on mobile

There are many different mobile devices that support Skype, so the exact steps vary by device, but the method described here will work for most users.

1. 1 First, delete your Skype history on your computer. Skype on your mobile device syncs with Skype on your computer, so any changes made on one device will automatically appear on the other. To delete history on your computer, find your operating system in the previous sections and follow the appropriate steps.
2. 2 Open Skype settings on your mobile device. The exact steps depend on the model of the device, but in most cases it is necessary:
   • Launch the "Settings" application; it is most likely marked with a gear icon.
   • Click Applications> Skype.
   • On some systems, you need to hold the Skype icon and then select "Settings" from the menu. On other systems, the "Settings" option is found in the drop-down menu on the main screen.
3. 3 Delete application data. This will also clear the history. To confirm your actions, click "OK" or a similar button. When you start Skype again, you will have to enter your credentials to sign in to your account.
   • Please be aware that deleting app data may delete all contacts from Skype. In this case, sync the mobile version of Skype with your computer or re-enter your contacts.

Tips

• Remember that deleted history cannot be recovered, so think twice before doing this.
• If you regularly delete history, change the settings so that correspondences are stored for a short time or not at all. Look for the corresponding option next to the "Clear history" option.
• Deleting the history will close all the correspondence that you started. Therefore, do not clear history if you are still texting with someone.
• Remember that Skype stores chat data in its cloud storage for 30 days. That is, if you delete the history on your device, it will be stored on the Skype server for some time.
