Since long-lasting lipstick is designed to stay on the lips for a long time, removing it takes more effort than using regular lipsticks or other makeup products. However, to remove long-lasting lipstick, there is no need to rub your lips to holes and get frustrated once again. All you need to do is resort to a makeup removal technique that works for your lips and the beauty products you have at your disposal.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Prepping the lips

  1. 1 If possible, wipe off any excess lipstick from your lips. Long-lasting lipstick is almost impossible to wipe off just like that. However, before starting the main makeup removal process, you need to take a paper towel or cotton pad and try to remove excess lipstick from your lips.
  2. 2 Use lip balm. Depending on the persistence of the lipstick used, lip balm can remove some or even all of it by itself. Apply a thick layer of balm to your lips and wait one to two minutes for it to absorb.
  3. 3 Exfoliate your lips. Moisten a soft-bristled toothbrush with water and rub your lips with the balm in a gentle circular motion. Brush your lips only lightly to avoid damaging them.
    • The combination of lip balm and light brushing will loosen the adhesion of the lipstick's color pigment to the skin.
    • If your lipstick lends itself to lip balm and exfoliation, you will notice it almost immediately. Stop rubbing your lips if the used lipstick doesn't want to exfoliate. Otherwise, the skin on the lips could be damaged, making it painful or cracking.
  4. 4 Wipe your lips with a warm cloth. The wipe will not wipe away the lipstick's waterproof pigment, but it can “loosen” it, making the remover you use later on more effective.
  5. 5 Rinse the tissue and wipe your lips again. If you notice that a warm cloth is partially removing lipstick, rinse it in warm water and gently wipe your lips again. By rinsing the napkin, you will prevent it from smearing the lipstick pigment all over your face.

Part 2 of 3: Removing Stubborn Pigment

  1. 1 Lubricate your lips with Vaseline. Petroleum jelly is just one of many products that can be used as a moisturizing lip mask to remove even the most stubborn lipstick. Apply a thick layer of Vaseline to your lips. The petroleum jelly must remain on the lips for at least five minutes to take effect on the lipstick.
  2. 2 Try coconut oil. As with petroleum jelly, coconut oil creates a moisturizing layer on top of the lipstick, which helps loosen the pigment and makes it easier to remove. Both coconut oil and petroleum jelly perform the same function, so it's up to you which remedy to use. Lubricate your lips with a thin layer of coconut oil and let it work on the lipstick for at least five minutes.
    • Be aware that coconut oil is more fluid than petroleum jelly by its consistency, so it is not always possible to use it carefully.
  3. 3 Use eye makeup remover. Although your lips dry out more with a regular eye makeup remover than with coconut oil or petroleum jelly, it is often able to remove long-lasting lipstick as well. Preparing your lips with a lip balm and then exfoliating them can be a particularly effective eye makeup remover. Dampen a cotton ball or paper towel and wipe your lips with it. Repeat the procedure if necessary.
    • Do not spill eye make-up remover in your mouth as it is for external use only.
  4. 4 Try using a face or body lotion. Sometimes, when you're very busy, you just don't have access to petroleum jelly, coconut oil, or a special makeup remover. In such a situation, lotions can be their replacement. While lotions are better at removing eye makeup and foundation and powder from your face, they can help you with lipstick if nothing else is at hand.
    • Be careful not to get the lotion in your mouth. Apply it only to the outside of your lips.
  5. 5 Wipe off the lipstick with a paper towel or cotton pad. After applying your chosen makeup remover (petroleum jelly, coconut oil, or eye makeup remover), the lipstick should easily rub off your lips. When you wash your lipstick, try not to use cotton balls, as they will leave behind lint on your lips.

Part 3 of 3: Moisturizing your lips

  1. 1 Monitor the body's water balance. In addition to using special topical lip products, keeping your body hydrated will also protect your lips from drying out and cracking. If you notice that your lips are dry and flaky, try to increase your water intake.
    • Try to carry a reusable water bottle with you at all times. In addition to the overall beneficial effects on health, proper water balance will improve blood circulation, which is beneficial for the condition of the skin and lips.
  2. 2 Use a lip scrub. You can easily make a lip scrub using sugar, honey and olive oil. The combination of these three ingredients will moisturize the skin of the lips and cleanse it of dry and dead cells.
    • To make a homemade scrub, mix together about one tablespoon of sugar and half a tablespoon each of honey and olive oil. This recipe can be slightly modified according to your own taste by taking a little more or less honey or butter. You can also make a larger amount of balm.
    • If you decide to make a scrub for the future, be sure to store it in a container with a tight lid to keep it from drying out.
    • If you prefer, you can add a fragrance (such as mint or vanilla) to the scrub to give it a special aroma or taste.
    • Make lip scrub a regular evening routine after brushing your teeth. Exfoliating your lips daily will help them stay healthy and hydrated. Usually experts recommend using a lip scrub at least once a week, and even more often when the lips are very dry.
  3. 3 Use a greasy, moisturizing lip balm. Lubricate your lips with a special balm or moisturizer to restore moisture content to your lips. Apply it as needed, especially if you use matte lipstick frequently, as it usually dries your lips a lot.
  4. 4 Do not use long-lasting matte lipstick on a permanent basis. Long-lasting matte lipstick is often extremely dry and difficult to remove. Even if you like the way this lipstick looks, try to alternate it with a moisturizing lipstick. It is much easier to remove long-lasting lipstick from moisturized lips than from dry and flaky lips.
    • If you regularly use a long-lasting matte lipstick, be sure to thoroughly moisturize your lips before applying it. Try using a natural lip balm with aloe and vitamin E in it. These ingredients will help moisturize your lips without creating excess shine that can interfere with the application of matte lipstick.
  5. 5 Don't rub your lips too hard. If you are faced with very long-wearing lipstick that is difficult to rub off, try to remove it in a few tries so that your lips can rest in between. Avoid rubbing your lips too hard so that you do not feel as if the skin has been removed from them.
