Save money and create a unique look by sewing curtains yourself. Tuck the side cuts and the bottom of the fabric, sew the curtain tape at the top, and you're done. This step-by-step guide will show you how easy it is.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Choosing a Fabric

  1. 1 Choose the fabric according to your shading needs. Since the curtains will not be lined, they will still allow some light to pass through.
    • For light shading, choose tulle or sheer curtains. So the curtains will let in most of the light, but still they will create some design and give the room a color tint.
    • If you want to block out sunlight, look for a heavy, dense fabric. Even without a lining, it can block out most of the sunlight, dramatically darkening your room.
    • If you are choosing fabric with a pattern, try to choose one that has the pattern on only one side or is identical on both sides. When the sun shines through the fabric, you will see the pattern of both sides at once, which, if they differ on different sides, may not look very good.
    • Fabrics with a tighter weave will cost you a little more, but the curtain can block most of the light due to its tightness.
  2. 2 Choose a fabric texture. Although you may not have to touch the curtains all the time, different textures of fabric look different when viewed from light.
    • Cotton and polyester are the most basic fabrics used for curtains and are also the easiest to work with.
    • Avoid using silk or satin as they will deteriorate under the influence of sunlight.
    • Sewing stretch fabrics and knitwear is very difficult as they stretch. After being hung, such fabrics begin to stretch and gather on the floor due to their elasticity.
    • Do not use fabric that is too coarse, as it will not drape properly when suspended. An example of a coarse fabric would be tulle, which lets in a lot of light but is not very soft to drape.
  3. 3 Get creative with your fabric. You don't have to go to a fabric store; look for something vintage at a thrift store or thrift store.
    • Try to find vintage tablecloths that fit your window. This will add an interesting, ultra-modern look to your room.
    • Using patterned sheets is a cheap alternative to buying rolled fabric. You can look for new ones or use vintage sheets from antique or thrift stores.

Method 2 of 3: Making curtains without lining without sewing

  1. 1 Hang the curtain rod. To understand how much fabric is needed, you need to know how high the curtain will hang.
    • To create the illusion of high ceilings, hang the cornice as close to the ceiling as possible or 30 cm or more above the window.
    • If you want the curtains to be long and gather on the floor, measure them 15-30 cm longer than the distance from the eaves to the floor.
  2. 2 Measure the fabric. Depending on the look you want to achieve, the width of the fabric can vary.
    • If you want the curtains to completely cover the window, each curtain should be half the width of the window plus 5 cm.For example, if your window is 120 cm wide, then each of the two curtains should be 60 cm wide plus 5 cm.
    • If the curtains are for decorative purposes only, measure for them only ¼ of the total width of the window.
  3. 3 Fold up the slices. You will need to tuck all the edges of the shade about 1.3 cm to keep it tidy.
  4. 4 Apply fabric adhesive thermal tape. It should adjoin the place where the second fold will be made in order to wrap a cut on it and melt the fabric with an iron.
  5. 5 Iron the tape to the fabric. Make sure that the fold is flat and that the thermal tape is inserted into it. Iron the folded fabric so that the heat from the iron will cause the tape to stick to the fabric covering both sides of it.
  6. 6 Iron the curtains around all 4 edges. If necessary, use extra tape in the corners to make them stick.
  7. 7 Attach the rings to the clips. Spread them evenly over the top edge of the shade so you can drape it evenly.
  8. 8 Hang curtains. Put the rings on the curtain rod, straighten the curtain in accordance with your aesthetic preferences. Enjoy the result!

Method 3 of 3: Sewing unlined curtains with a sewing machine

  1. 1 Measure the fabric. Similar to making curtains without using a sewing machine, you need to decide how much they should cover the window and then add a hem allowance to the measurements.
    • Slide 15 cm over the fabric at the top of the shade to create a drawstring for the curtain rod.
    • Fold-over fabric edges on the sewing machine require less seam allowances than with thermal tape, so the seam allowance can be reduced, but it should be at least 2 cm.
  2. 2 Fold up the cuts and iron. You need to create a sturdy fold to make it easier to sew. Pin it with pins.
  3. 3 Sew the side gates. You can do it manually or on a sewing machine, but the latter will take significantly less time. Sew on the newly ironed folds, gradually removing the pins from them.
  4. 4 Sew the cross folds. Follow the same rules as above, ironing the fold over with an iron and removing the pins as you sew.
  5. 5 Apply adhesive tape to the headboard of the curtains. Measure the tape according to the width of the curtains and flatten it to the top edge. This will make the top thicker and more durable for hanging curtains.
  6. 6 Fold over 15 cm of fabric on top to create a drawstring. If your curtain rod has a large circumference, then tuck in more fabric to keep the drawstring more loose.
  7. 7 Sew the drawstring. Make sure that the drawstring fold is even throughout its entire length, otherwise the curtain rod may not fit into the drawstring, or the curtain will drape unevenly.
  8. 8 Tuck the bottom of the curtains. Tuck the bottom of the curtains to the desired length and press down.
    • For a cleaner look at the bottom corners of the curtains, back up the side gates a little.
    • Fold over the sides of the corner so that they connect diagonally. Fasten the corners by hand (if you are in a hurry, you can also do this on a sewing machine).
  9. 9 Hang curtains. Pass the barbell through the curtain drawer you created. Spread the curtains according to your taste. Enjoy your new curtains!

Tips

  • Double check measurements before cutting, as mistakes can cost you dearly.
  • Before stitching two canvases into one wide curtain, lay out the pieces on the floor and check that the pattern matches.
  • The easiest way to cut the fabric in a straight line is to lay it out along the edge of a table that has a perfect right angle to cut the fabric.
