This article will show you how to create a new folder in Windows and Mac OS X.

Method 1 of 2: On Windows

1. 1 Navigate to where you want to create the folder. For example, a folder can be created on the desktop or in another folder.
   • To launch File Explorer, open the Start Menu , in the search bar, enter "explorer" (without quotes), and then click on the explorer icon at the top of the Start menu. In the left pane of the Explorer window, you can find and open any folder.
2. 2 Right click on an empty space. A context menu will open. Do not click on a file or folder, as this will open another menu.
   • If a folder is open (for example, Documents), click the Home tab at the top left of the Explorer window and click New Folder in the toolbar.
   • If you have a trackpad instead of a mouse, click it with two fingers (this is the same as right-clicking).
3. 3 Please select Create. This option is at the bottom of the context menu; a pop-up menu will open.
4. 4 Click on Folder. It's near the top of the pop-up menu.
5. 5 Enter the folder name and press ↵ Enter. A folder with the specified name will be created.
   • The folder name must not contain any punctuation marks or other special characters.
   • If you do not enter a name, the folder will be named New Folder.

Method 2 of 2: On Mac OS X

1. 1 Navigate to where you want to create the folder. For example, a folder can be created on the desktop or in another folder.
   • You can open Finder (the blue face icon at the bottom of the screen) and then navigate to the desired folder, such as the Documents folder.
2. 2 Click on File. This menu is in the upper left side of the screen.
3. 3 Click on Create a folder. The folder will be created.
   • You can also right-click (or with two fingers on the trackpad) in an empty space. Do not click on a file or folder, as this will open another menu.
4. 4 Enter the folder name and press ⏎ Return. A folder with the specified name will be created.
   • The folder name must not include the characters ":" and "?".
