1 Take measurements. Ask the person for whom the skirt is being sewn to stand still and keep their back straight.

• Use a tape measure to measure the length around your waist.
• Measure from your waist to the part of your leg where the skirt should end. Most tutu skirts drop 28 to 58 cm from the waist.

2 Make an elastic waistband. Cut a piece of elastic that is 1.27 cm wide and 10 cm shorter than your waist measurement.

• Sew the ends of the elastic together with a sewing machine.
• Using different stitches, sew 2 or 3 times to prevent the elastic from falling apart.
• The result is an elastic circle. Ask the person who will be wearing the tutu skirt to try on the elastic to see if it fits snugly around the waist.

3 Choose a tulle to be used for your homemade skirt. Tulle is sold in a variety of colors and can be found in fabric stores or arts and crafts stores.

• Most tutu skirts are solid color, but different tulle colors can also be used together.

4 Cut the tulle into stripes. Multiply the final length of the skirt by 2, add 3.8 cm to the resulting figure, and you get the length of the strip. Make each strip 7.6 cm wide.

• For example, if the finished tutu is 50 cm long, cut the tulle into strips 105 cm long and 7.6 cm wide.

5 Attach the tulle to the elastic. Fold the tulle over the elastic. Sew the two layers together just below the elastic with a sewing machine. Do this with all the tulle strips until you have a full circle.

6 Check the product. Have the customer try on a tutu to make sure it is long enough and comfortable to dance in. A tutu skirt is often worn over a leotard or bodice, tights and pointe shoes.

7 Ready.

Tips

• It will be more convenient with a sewing machine, but it is not necessary. The elastic and tulle can be sewn by hand using a needle and thread. It just takes more time. Another easy way to attach the strips to the elastic is to tie them securely together.
• Buy more tulle than you need. For a tutu skirt, a small child will need at least 9 m. For an adult, it is worth buying at least 13.7 m. It is better to buy more tulle in case of mistakes or additional corrections.
