Wigs, hair extensions, and other types of synthetic hair provide an excellent opportunity to enhance your look without relying on natural curls. But since synthetic hair is artificial, you will have to wash it in a special way to keep it soft. A couple of simple hair care methods will keep your hair healthy.

Steps

Part 1 of 4: How to shampoo artificial hair

  1. 1 Comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb. Large teeth, unlike small ones, will not cling to individual hairs, making them ideal for most synthetic wigs and hair pieces. If your wig has tight curls, use your fingers to comb through it rather than using a comb to avoid damaging your hair. If you are having difficulty brushing your hair, spray water or a straightener on your hair to loosen the strands.
  2. 2 Mix cool water and shampoo in a basin. Fill the container with enough cool or warm water to completely cover your hair. Then add 1–2 caps of mild artificial hair shampoo (slightly more for large wigs and less for small hair extensions). Stir the water and shampoo to make a soapy solution.
  3. 3 Let your hair sit in your pelvis for 5-10 minutes. Pull your hair out to its full length, and then lower it into the container. Submerge all hair in water and soak for 5-10 minutes. The shampoo will remove all dirt from your hair, leaving it clean and soft.
  4. 4 Rinse your hair to speed up the brushing process. Rinse your hair up and down and side to side. Be careful not to tangle your hair. Do not rub or pull on your hair to avoid damaging or ripping off your curls.
  5. 5 Rinse your hair in cool water. After 5 minutes, pull the hair out of the basin and place it under a stream of cool water. This will rinse off the shampoo while maintaining the shape of the hair and the outer coat.

Part 2 of 4: Using hair conditioner or fabric softener (fabric softener)

  1. 1 Fill a basin with cool water. If you don't have another empty container on hand, pour out the soapy water and rinse the basin. Then fill it with enough cool or warm water to completely cover your hair.
  2. 2 Add 0.5 cups (120 ml) hair or laundry conditioner. The conditioner will help keep hair from tangle-free and keep it soft and shiny. A fabric softener will soften your hair, but it won't fix tangled or crowded curls.
    • When choosing a conditioner, give preference to products marked "for artificial hair" or similar.
  3. 3 Let your hair sit in your pelvis for 10 minutes. Straighten the fake hair and soak it in the solution. Submerge your hair completely in water and leave it there for about 10 minutes. Damaged hair should be soaked for 30 minutes, an hour, or even overnight.
  4. 4 Rinse hair in water. As with the previous method, rinse your hair up and down and side to side to coat each section with conditioner or fabric softener. To avoid damage, do not rub your hair and generally handle it with care.
    • If you want to soak your hair for a long time, rinse it in the first 5-10 minutes.
  5. 5 Pull out hair, but do not rinse out conditioner or fabric softener. When the hair is ready, pull it out of the pelvis. Leave the conditioner or fabric softener on your hair to continue absorbing it.

Part 3 of 4: How to Dry Synthetic Hair

  1. 1 Squeeze out any remaining water. Pick up a bun of fake hair and gently squeeze it between your thumb and forefinger. Run your fingers through your hair to squeeze out any excess water. Repeat the same procedure with the rest of the hair. To avoid damaging your hair, do not twist it while trying to squeeze out the water.
  2. 2 Blot your hair with a towel if necessary. Hairpieces and long-strand wigs, gently pat dry with a clean towel. To avoid damaging your hair, never rub it with a towel.
  3. 3 Let your hair dry naturally. If you've washed your wig, place it on a wig stand, paint can, or mannequin head. Avoid styrofoam coasters as they can damage the wig. If you've washed false hair, lay it out on a clean, flat surface.
    • Using hair dryers and other hot styling tools can permanently reshape synthetic hair, so try not to use them.

Part 4 of 4: How to care for artificial hair

  1. 1 Use a synthetic hair care product. Since artificial hair and natural hair have different origins, different products must be used to keep them soft and clean. Choose shampoos, conditioners, and other hair care products that are specifically designed for synthetic hair or wigs. If your local supermarket doesn't find such products, look at health and beauty stores or tailoring shops.
    • Among conventional hair care products, you should in particular avoid hairspray, which can degrade synthetic threads.
  2. 2 Comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb. When detangling artificial hair, be sure to use a wide-toothed comb or brush to prevent the bristles from snagging the hairs. Buy a special wig comb if you like. To avoid damaging your wig, start combing your hair from the ends and work your way towards the roots.
  3. 3 Try not to wash your hair too often. Unlike human hair, artificial hair is not affected by the sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands and therefore does not need to be washed as often. If you wear artificial hair every day, wash it about once a week. Otherwise, do it no more than once a month to keep your hair soft.
  4. 4 Reduce the amount of hair products you use. Using too much hair care products can weaken artificial hair and make it coarser over time. To prevent this from happening, only use shampoos, conditioners and sprays that can be used on synthetic hair. Also, stay away from gels and other similar products, unless they are specifically designed for wigs or hair extensions. To avoid damaging your hair, use as little cosmetics as possible on it.
  5. 5 Do not expose artificial hair to high temperatures. This includes hot water, as well as hot styling tools such as a hairdryer, curling iron and hair straightener. If synthetic hair is not made from heat-resistant fibers, high temperatures can damage the shape of the hair and ruin the strands.
  6. 6 Remove fake hair at night. Sleeping in a wig can completely ruin the shape and texture of synthetic hair. To prevent this from happening, remove your wig or hair extensions before bed. Leave the wig on the stand and lay out the wig on a flat surface. If the hair extensions are securely attached to your natural strands and cannot be removed, sleep on a satin pillow or braid the hair pieces before bed.
