To ride safely in winter, your wheels need good grip, even on ice and snow. If you don't want to spend money on studded tires, you can make your own.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Rubber with a large tread

  1. 1 Buy everything you need.
  2. 2 Use a very thin drill bit to drill through the spikes on the tire that you intend to spike.
  3. 3 Screw in a self-tapping screw from the inside. If the hole is not perpendicular to the tire, the screw will stick out to the side.
    • Make a hole and immediately screw in the self-tapping screw. If you drill the holes first and then screw in the screws, the holes will be very difficult to find.
  4. 4 Glue the inner surface of the tire with reinforced tape, in some cases it is better to use two layers of tape. In bike shops you can find "liners" such as Slime or Mr. Tuffy, they can be used instead of tape to protect the camera.
  5. 5 Place the tire on the rim. Fitting the tire will be like fighting a porcupine, so take care of your hands.

Method 2 of 3: Shallow Tread Rubber

  1. 1 Remove the wheels from the bike and then the rubber from the rims.
  2. 2 Find a place where you can screw the bolts. Choose a place between the rubber spikes, try to choose places closer to the center and slightly around the edges.
  3. 3 Mark with a marker where you want to put the spikes and drill holes there. Drill smaller holes, it may take some time to screw the bolts into them, but they will not fall through.
  4. 4 Screw the bolts with the threads outward, then screw the nuts onto them from the outside. The nuts will act as spikes.
  5. 5 Glue the inside of the tire with two coats of tape.
  6. 6 Slip the tires over the rims and put the wheels back on the bike.

Method 3 of 3: Chains and Clamps

  1. 1 This method is much simpler, but only suitable for bicycles without rim brakes.
  2. 2 Buy everything you need.
  3. 3 Remove the wheels from the bike and measure the circumference of the rim and tire.
  4. 4 Cut the chain pieces to the required length.
  5. 5 Secure the pieces of chain wrapped around the rim and tire with metal clips or wire. You can also tighten the chain with bolts and nuts.
  6. 6 Place the wheels back on the bike. This shouldn't be a problem, but if the wheels won't stop, remove the fenders.

Tips

  • Prepare that it will take a long time.
  • Pump less wheel pressure: 37-42 PSI, on slippery surfaces, it even improves traction.
  • For driving on ice, a thin wheel wrapped in a chain is very suitable on the front. Read on to find out how to wrap a bicycle chain around a wheel.

    • If you have an old bike chain, it's long enough to wrap around a thin touring wheel. To do this, you need a chain squeeze.
    • Lower the wheel and install the chain. Inflate the wheel and the pressure will keep the chain in place. This method gives the effect of two rows of thorns.
    • With a chain on the front wheel and simple high tread rubber on the rear wheel, you can ride and turn normally. The chain on the front wheel provides good braking.
  • The cleats are great for riding on snow, sand, mud, grass and other similar surfaces. But bicycles are not good for loose gravel, so try to go around it. The spikes will not help you ride over ravi or small cobblestones.
  • The liner can be made from an old chamber by cutting it lengthwise. Wrap the new tube over the old one and put it in the tire. Sometimes it's even better than scotch tape.

Warnings

  • This is not a very safe bike modification, so you do it at your own risk. If the outside is too slippery to cycle without winter tires, it may be too slippery to ride a bike at all. In this case, it is better to choose another mode of transport.
  • The self-tapping screw can punch the camera even through the tape or through the liner from the old camera.
  • Studs are only suitable for mountain bike wheels. It is not recommended to do this on tires already 27mm.
  • Improper tire pressure can cause a fall.
  • The third method will complicate the replacement of the camera in the event of a puncture, since you will need to remove the chain first.
  • This method is not suitable for tubeless tires. By drilling the tire, you will break the tightness, and the pressure in the wheel will not hold.

What do you need

  • Method 1:
    • the tire with the deepest tread
    • box of short flat head screws, wood screws will do
  • Method 2:
    • bicycle tires
    • 40-200 short bolts and matching nuts. Do not use long or wide bolts or tall nuts. Take short bolts and wide nuts. Nuts should not be higher than 1cm.
  • Method 3:
    • Bicycle chain.
    • Steel clips, wire or bolts and nuts.
