We all have a favorite blanket, in which we wrap ourselves on cold evenings, lying on the couch, but few people know how to make their own blanket. Sew or knit your own personal blanket, or make a blanket to donate to friends or family. Choose a bedspread style from the options below and start your personal, warm creation.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Make a knotted fleece blanket

  1. 1 Measure out two pieces of fleece fabric so that they are the size you want the blanket to be. You will need 1.5 to 2.5 m of fleece. You can choose any color and pattern.
    • You can mix colors and patterns using a single color on one side and a pattern on the other. In this case, you will need one piece for each side.
  2. 2 Place your first piece of fleece with the wrong side facing up, and then place the second piece of fleece on top of it with the right side facing up. Make sure the rough sides of the fleece are facing each other and the fluffy sides are facing out.
  3. 3 Place a self-healing mat under the fleece and, using a round cutter, cut the rough edges of the fleece. Use the lines on the template to cut straight.
  4. 4 Cut a 10 cm by 10 cm square out of thick paper. Place this piece on one of the edges of the fabric and cut the fleece around the paper so you cut a square from the corner. Repeat with the rest of the edges.
  5. 5 Take a measuring tape and place it across the fleece, starting with one cut square and going down to the next. The distance from the edge of the tape to the edge of the fleece should be 10 cm. Fasten the tape in place so that it does not move.
  6. 6 Cut into equal pieces a 10 cm piece of fleece under the measuring tape using scissors or a round cutter. As a rule, the pieces should be 2.5 cm wide. Cut strictly to the tape.
  7. 7 Repeat with all sides of the fleece, making sure you secure the measuring tape in place. You should now have fingers on all sides of the fleece.
  8. 8 Separate the top fleece layer from the bottom layer on each fringe and tie them together in a knot. Do this with all the fringe on the bedspread.

Method 2 of 4: Tie the blanket

  1. 1 Check out knitting, putting on the first row and the last row if you don't know how to do it.
  2. 2 Cast on the desired number of loops. These stitches will be the base of the knitted squares.
  3. 3 Loop the yarn around your index finger and make a loop on the knitting needle. Tighten the loop on the knitting needle.
    • If you are using size 7, 8, 9 or 10 needles cast on about 150 stitches to make a medium bedspread. Using size 11, 12 or 13 needles cast on about 70-80 stitches. For more needles, cast on 60 to 70 stitches.
  4. 4 Start knitting using garter stitch. Knit squares to the desired size, and then tie all squares together to make a bedspread.
  5. 5 Start knitting squares. Use any kind of yarn.
  6. 6 Sew the squares together when you assemble them. Gather long rows of squares first, and then sew the rows together.
  7. 7 Make the last row by threading the left knitting needle through the loop you made the first one and pulling it over the second loop and finally removing the loop from the knitting needle.
  8. 8 Tie the remaining loops and cut off the loose ends. Tie the end of the yarn into a knot and thread it through the loops with the needles.

Method 3 of 4: Crochet the coverlet

  1. 1 Select yarn and crochet size. You will need about 3-4 skeins of yarn for a foot cover or 6-8 skeins for a large cover.
    • There are many different hook sizes and "1" is the smallest. The larger the hook, the larger the loop.
  2. 2 Decide if you want to make a double crochet or single crochet blanket. A single crochet is the easiest way and is great for beginners who are just learning to knit.
  3. 3 Make the first chain of stitches on the crochet hook. Make a slip knot on the crochet hook, wrap the yarn around the crochet from the front to the back, and thread a new loop through the knot.
  4. 4 To make a single crochet, wrap one end of the yarn around the crochet hook. Start behind the hook and go over it, and then thread under the hook.
    • For a double crochet, pass the crochet hook through the fourth loop from the crochet hook. Crochet over the crochet hook and pull it through the center of the chain. Next, make a yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops. Repeat with the last two stitches on the hook.
  5. 5 At the end of the row, flip your work over so that the last loop is the first loop you will begin the next row with. Work from left to right.
  6. 6 Continue this process until you have about 1 meter of yarn left. You can change colors as soon as you come to the end of the row before flipping your work.
  7. 7 Cut off the excess yarn, leaving about 15 cm, pass it through the needle and pull it through the last loop on the hook. Before trimming the edges, weave the loose edges into the bedspread, making small loops.

Method 4 of 4: Make a quilted bedspread

  1. 1 Choose a pattern and fabric. You can either create a template using checkered paper or find a free template online. You can use as many different patterns and colors as you like.
  2. 2 Transfer the template to the fabric and cut the pieces. Use a round cutter and a self-healing mat to make the squares as precise as possible.
  3. 3 Sew each square together, leaving a seam allowance of approximately 80 cm. Use a sewing machine to sew the squares together into the desired pattern.
  4. 4 Pin the squares together. Sew three layers together using a simple stitch at each end of the quilt. You will remove the extra seams later.
    • The fusible batting needs to be smoothed over other layers, but regular batting is not needed.
  5. 5 Sew the quilt together, starting in the center. Follow the seams of the quilted pieces and leave a seam allowance between the pieces, about 80 cm.
  6. 6 Remove the temporary seams that held the three layers together. You should be able to cut the seams easily with scissors.
  7. 7 Add edges to the quilted bedspread if desired. Sew long pieces of fabric to the outside edges of the bedspread to create a more complex and refined pattern.

Tips

  • Large crochet hooks will make large loops, which means large holes in the bedspread. For a warmer, tightly woven bedspread, use smaller hooks.
  • Select the correct size knitting needles to match the yarn of your choice.
  • Choose colors and patterns that go well with each other when using many different fabrics.
  • When you are making a quilt, it will be convenient for you to work with a frame so that the squares do not diverge.
