You can't really hide a folder from other users, but you can prevent certain files and folders from appearing in search results on your computer by changing system attributes (Windows) or using Terminal (Mac). This will make the file "invisible" and will not appear in search results on your computer.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: How to hide a file (Windows)

1. 1 Right click on the desktop. First you need to create a regular file.
2. 2 Hover over Create.
3. 3 Select "Folder" or "Text Document". Do this in the menu that opens.

   On Windows, right-click on the file. Now select "Properties" from the menu, check the box next to "Hidden" and click "OK".

9. 9 Click on OK. The file will be hidden, meaning it will not appear in search results or in the Explorer window. But if you try to create a file in the same folder and under the same name, the new file will be named "Filename (2)" - this indicates that there is a hidden file in the folder.
   • The file will be hidden (literally) as long as the function of showing hidden files and folders is disabled on the computer.

Method 2 of 4: Find the file (Windows)

1. 1 Type "show hidden" in the start menu search bar.
2. 2 Click Show Hidden Files and Folders. This is the first option in the list of search results.
3. 3 Double click on "Hidden Files and Folders". If two other options are already displayed below this option (indented), skip this step.
4. 4 Click Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives.
5. 5 Click on OK.
6. 6 Close the Folder Options window.
7. 7 Go to your desktop. On it, you will see files and folders that were previously hidden (the icons of these files and folders will be semi-transparent, which means hidden items).
   • To hide files again, return to the Hidden Files and Folders menu and click Don't Show Hidden Files, Folders, or Drives.

   On macOS, you need to use the terminal. Enter "chflags hidden" and drag the file or folder into the terminal window to specify the file / folder path. Now press "Return" to hide the file.

2. 2 Click on new folder.

5. 5 Click on the magnifying glass icon. It's in the upper right corner of the screen.
   • You can also hold ⌘ Command and press Space.

1. 1 Click on Transition. It's in the upper-right corner of the toolbar.
2. 2 Click on Go to folder.
3. 3 Enter ~ / Desktop / (folder name).
4. 4 Click on Go to. Now you can view the contents of the folder.
   • Files placed in a hidden folder will also be hidden.

Tips

• On Windows and macOS, you can also hide existing files and folders.
• Hidden files do not appear in regular search results on your computer.
• You can hide a file in any folder, not just on the desktop (for example, in the Documents folder).
