Roofing material is a type of roofing that consists of layers of modified bitumen - similar to asphalt - heat is retained by layers of fiberglass. Used only for flat or nearly flat roofs, roofing felt is an excellent means of preventing moisture build-up and eliminates the need for constant maintenance.Although not particularly recommended for use in particularly rainy or snowy areas, roofing felt is generally available everywhere and can be installed in a matter of hours and is a relatively straightforward process.

Steps

  1. 1 Remove old roofing, debris and other items from the surface to be covered.
    • Removing old roofing is not always necessary; check local building codes. Often times, roofing felt roofing is installed directly on top of the old roof covering.
  2. 2 Attach metal flares to the edges of the roof.
  3. 3 Apply a primer to the metal flares to help the roofing adhere more easily.
  4. 4 Place the first fiberglass sheet on top of the roof area and make sure it lies flat.
  5. 5 Attach the fiberglass sheet to the roof surface with a nail gun. Drive in nails about every 5 inches (or 13 cm) or so.
  6. 6 Roll out the first layer of modified bitumen over the fiberglass sheet.
  7. 7 Cut the modified bitumen layer to size with a knife. You should stretch the modified bitumen to cover any uneven edges or corners.
  8. 8 Unwind half of the modified bitumen so that one half of the fiberglass is exposed.
  9. 9 Begin the treatment with a fire from the bottom of the modified bitumen, using the burner flame, working slowly, with steady movements, heat the bitumen evenly.
  10. 10 Roll the bitumen back onto the fiberglass sheet, as soon as it starts to melt, press down with your boot so that the sheet sticks.
  11. 11 Finish the fire treatment using the first half of the bitumen. Repeat with the other half.
  12. 12 Work over the first layer of modified bitumen once it has been fire-treated and applied to the fiberglass. Walk over it with heavy boots so that it sticks to the fiberglass.
  13. 13 Repeat steps 5-13 twice as there are three layers of fiberglass and modified bitumen on top of each other, with a layer of modified bitumen on top.

Tips

  • Make sure to install modified bitumen over the metal flares to create an edge for your roof. If the modified bitumen hangs around the edges, walk with a knife and tear the modified bitumen from the fiberglass by heating it with a flame and pressing especially hard on the metal.
  • The most difficult part of installing a roof covering is lifting the roofing materials onto the roof. Check with your roofing supplier for rooftop delivery availability.
  • In general, you can apply only one layer of roofing, but it is better to apply three. The durability of the roof increases with each layer, and the roof covering immediately has the advantage of adhering more tightly together.

Warnings

  • Never install the roof covering alone. Invite a friend to watch you use the fire and follow you with a roll of modified bitumen so that it sticks to the fiberglass before it can be hardened.
