Why buy a superhero costume when you can have a lot of fun sewing it yourself at home? Make a costume for your favorite character, or create your own superhero with your own powers, using simple arts and crafts materials that lie throughout your home. Think about the basic elements of a superhero costume below and start creating your superhero look!

Steps

Method 1 of 5: creating the base

  1. 1 Get some spandex. All superheroes wear tight clothing, be it a jumpsuit, leggings, or a full body suit. Pick one or two primary colors and start creating your costume, starting with spandex.
  2. 2 Look for full-length leggings and a long-sleeved shirt. Most superheroes cover their bodies completely so that no one will recognize them.
    • Thick colored fabrics can be used instead of spandex.
    • You can buy an Under Armor tracksuit or go to American Apparel if you can't find colored spandex.
  3. 3 Assemble a full body suit. If you're ready for a moment of embarrassment, you can buy the outfit from a costume store or order online through a website such as superfansuits.com.

Method 2 of 5: Hiding Your Identity

  1. 1 Hide your face with a mask. As a superhero, it is imperative to hide your identity from potential enemies. Make a mask to hide your face and prevent the possibility of being identified. There are several ways to make a mask at home.
  2. 2 Cut the mask out of the paper. Take a piece of cardboard, try it on your face, and ask your friend to draw two circles for your eyes and a dot for your nose on it (you can also use a paper plate).
    • Draw the mask on a piece of paper using the dots as guidelines for how large the mask should be.
    • Cut out the shape of your mask and poke two holes on the side where your ears will be.
    • Thread a ribbon or string through each hole so you can tie the mask behind your head.
    • Draw the outline of the mask with colored markers, paint, or decorate it with sequins, glitter, feathers, or any other decoration that suits your superhero.
  3. 3 Make a mask with silver foil and tape. Fold three layers of foil together and press down on your face to create an imprint.
    • Highlight the locations of your eyes with a felt-tip pen. And with scissors, cut out the edges of the mask, eyes, mouth and other holes you indicate.
    • Punch holes on each side for your ears, and thread in a string or tape to hold the mask over your face.
    • Make sure the template you are using is tight, cover it tightly with the desired fiber, such as wrapping paper.
    • Decorate the mask with either acrylic paint or other decorations such as feathers and rhinestones.
  4. 4 Make papier-mâché mask. Inflate a balloon the size of your head. Place the newspaper flat on a table or floor to use as a work surface.
    • Tear paper or cut thin fabric into long strips.
    • Combine 2 cups flour and 1 cup water in a bowl. You can use 2 cups of glue instead of flour if you don't have it on hand.
    • Dip strips of paper or cloth into the mixture and glue them over the balloon until the entire surface is covered. Place the stripes in a random, overlapping order.
    • Let it dry completely and then pierce the ball with a needle. Using strong scissors, cut the resulting balloon in half, starting at the base of the balloon where it was tied, and going all the way to the top.
    • Shape the mask to fit your face, punch holes for the eyes and mouth, and finally decorate it with paints and other decorative items as you wish!

Method 3 of 5: Crafting the Cloak

  1. 1 Find a piece of fabric. Most superheroes are hard to come by without such a brave accessory. Make a raincoat out of any rectangular piece of shabby fabric lying around in your home, such as an old sheet that you are allowed to cut. Felt will also work for a raincoat as it is inexpensive and can be found at most arts and crafts stores.
  2. 2 Gather your fabric in the shoulder area and mark the points connecting the corners where the raincoat will fall. Make sure the raincoat is not too long so that you do not step on the edges or trip over it.
  3. 3 Cut out the shape of the cloak you want. Use a ruler to mark points and cut a rectangle out of the fabric.
  4. 4 Decorate your cloak. In its center, attach a symbol or letter that represents the power of your superhero.
    • Felt is especially suitable for decoration as it is easy to manipulate and your symbol will not get lost while you fly.
    • You can attach your symbol using either a glue gun or Velcro tape.
  5. 5 Try on your raincoat. Tie the fabric in a knot that will be pinned to your chest, or gather the fabric in the shoulder area with Velcro that will wrap around you on both sides.

Method 4 of 5: Flaunting Fashionable Boots

  1. 1 Find brightly colored boots. If you have a pair of great rubber boots, include them in your outfit to make it really popular.
  2. 2 Put on sporty high-top knee socks. If you are not going to walk down the street, you can only walk in them. Choose the color to your liking.
  3. 3 Make adhesive boots. If you're going to surf the neighborhood or dance until you drop, adhesive boots are a quick and inexpensive option for colored boots.
    • Take your old sneakers and wrap them in several layers of plastic around your shin as high as you want them to be.
    • Buy the Velcro tape the same color as your character's boots. Begin to glue the polyethylene on top in small pieces, trying to keep the tape tight and straight. Don't pull too tight around your legs.
    • Once you've covered the entire surface of your boots, you're ready to start the show!
    • If you want to make your boots ahead of time, use scissors to cut them neatly along the back so you can take them off. When you want to put them on, pull them over the shoe and tape over the back with the same Velcro.
    • For a flawless look for your boots, apply a couple of centimeters of tape to flatten the surface of the boots and make it look smooth.
  4. 4 Sew boots. Stand on a piece of cardboard and trace your right and left feet with a felt-tip pen, leaving 1/4 inch between the outline and your foot.
    • Use a tape measure to measure from the tip of your toes to the top of your boot on your shin. Measure your shin circumference at the highest part of the boot. Add 5 centimeters to line up the boots if necessary.
    • Transfer the outline of your measurements to a separate piece of paper and join them together to make a T-shape upside down. Repeat these steps for the other leg.
    • Cut out two soles and four wrapping pieces, then place them on your felt. Using a pencil or pen, trace the shape of each template onto the felt and cut out your details.
    • Pin the two wrap pieces in an L shape on the top of your leg and sew these pieces together along the front and back seam. Turn out the felt boot, hiding the seam.
    • Pin the soles with a sewn L-tube and sew around the edges twice for a secure seam. Repeat the same for the second felt boot - and you're done!

Method 5 of 5: Uncovering Your Superpowers

  1. 1 Complete your superhero outfit with essential accessories. Attach decorative weapons or decorate your outfit to show the kids in the neighborhood how powerful a superhero you are.
    • For example, if you have the ability to transform into an animal, cut an image of it out of paper or felt and attach it to the front of your shirt or the back of your raincoat.
    • If you're going to be in the guise of an existing superhero, make sure your accessory matches your character.
  2. 2 Become Superman. Superman's superpowers are an integral part of him. Recreate his look by pinning the heroic "S" on the front of the shirt. You can make it from felt glued with a heat gun or cardboard. Attach the letter to your shirt with a hot glue gun or Velcro.
  3. 3 Shine like Spider-Man. Like Superman, Spidey doesn't need fancy weapons to fight crime. To create the Spiderman costume, paint the entire outfit with cobwebs, highlighting the area on the chest where the center of the web will be.
    • You can finish off the spider web by decorating it with gooey silver glitter, or you can spread white glue on the cobweb strings and cover them with silver glitter while the glue is wet. When the glue is dry, shake off any excess gloss.
    • You can also cut the spider out of paper or felt by attaching it to the center of your web.
  4. 4 Putting together the Batman costume. Batman wears a black belt with square side pockets in which he stores all of his tech gadgets. If you want, you can make a belt out of felt and sew on pockets, or remake an old belt by attaching binocular cases to the sides to store your gadgets.
    • Don't forget to put in your pockets such gadgets as the Batman display (you can get a black walkie-talkie), Bat-handcuffs (they'll be replaced by black plastic handcuffs) and Batman's lasso (black rope).
    • If you do not have a walkie-talkie or handcuffs, you can make them out of cardboard or draw on an element of the costume.
  5. 5 Surprise everyone with a costume Wonder Women. A golden lasso, golden belt, golden protective bracelets and a shining tiara clearly distinguish this heroine.
    • Spray any rope golden and attach it to your belt. You can make a Wonder Wooman belt out of cardboard or felt, or by painting an existing belt with gold spray paint.
    • Slip wide gold bracelets around your wrists, choosing from either handcrafted bracelets or armbands cut from shiny fabric or gold foil. Place them around your wrist
    • Finally, make a precious tiara using a headband that can be adorned with golden details, or simply cut out a tiara shape and clip it around your head. Stick a red star on the front of the tiara.
  6. 6 Making a shield Captain America. In addition to his impressive mask, Captain America wears a super shield. You can cut the shield out of cardboard, giving it a rounded shape and decorating it in the appropriate colors. You can also use a plastic round plate, a round pot lid, or a trash can lid.
    • Attach a piece of felt or tape to the inside of the backboard with a heat gun or stapler to make a handle for the backboard.
    • Cut a white star out of paper or felt and glue it in the center of the shield.
  7. 7 We roam the streets like Wolverine Wolverine's sharp claws are easy to make from foil and cardboard.
    • Take your rubber dishwashing gloves and spray paint them the color of your skin.
    • Cut long, sharp claws out of cardboard and wrap them in foil.
    • Use a heat gun to attach the claws to the gloves between your fingers.

Warnings

  • Do not decorate your outfit with real weapons, as this is extremely dangerous (and sometimes illegal).
  • Do not burn yourself when using the hot gun.
  • Be careful walking around with fake weapons.

Tips

  • Check out your superhero's name and try to print it on a costume somewhere!
  • Create a gang of superheroes with your friends for fun collaborative costume ideas.
  • Felt is a simple fabric for making costumes, but not very durable. If possible, wear shoes under your felt boots.
  • Take enough time to complete your superhero costume. Some methods are time consuming.
  • Be creative! You may not be an existing superhero character. Pick your favorite superpowers, add your favorite colors and accessories, and get creative!
  • If you don't feel comfortable wearing spandex, opt for a plain shirt and sweatpants.
