1 Find a jersey to use as a template. Since you will use it as a base, you need to make sure that it is the right size for you and looks good on you.- If you don't have a sample jersey, don't worry. You can do without it.
- If you do not have a sample jersey, trim off the sleeves and piping from the neckline. Consider folding the shirt in half lengthwise to keep the sides of the top symmetrical.
- If you want to leave the slices unprocessed and untwisted, skip this step. T-shirts are made of jersey that does not crumble.
- If you are using a sewing machine, try to set the sewing stitch on the sewing machine for knitted fabrics. Most of the stitches of this stitch are laid in a straight line, but every few stitches they are broken by a couple of stitches to the side that looks like a tick.
- When you are finished sewing, be sure to tie a tight knot at the end of the threads and trim off any excess.
Method 2 of 2: Sports Top
- 1 Take a T-shirt that you don't mind cutting. It must be washed. If you have a new T-shirt, put it in the washing machine, wash, and then dry. New T-shirts will shrink after the first wash. You must make sure that your T-shirt is the correct size before you start to cut a sports jersey from it.
- The sports tank top has deeper armholes on the back, which leave only a narrow strip of fabric between the shoulder blades.
- 2 Cut the sleeves off the T-shirt. Start cutting from the armpits up to the shoulder line.
- 3 Cut the bottom hem from the shirt, then cut to create a long strip of fabric. Cut the bottom hem seam completely straight along the stitching line. This leaves a large cloth ring in your hands. Cut it along one of the side seams to create a long strip of fabric. You will use it to decorate the back of your tank top.
- 4 Cut out deep armholes at the back for a sporty look. Deepen the armholes towards the back so that only a few centimeters of fabric remain between them. Be careful not to touch the armholes on the front of the tank top.
- Make sure to make the armholes symmetrical.
- Remember to keep the armholes deep on the back. Only a few centimeters should remain between them in the area of the shoulder blades.
- 5 Make a deep V-neck on the back of the tank top. Find the mid-back line first, then make a deep V at the neckline. The corner of this cut should be between the armholes. This will prevent the fabric from wrinkling unnecessarily when you later tie it with a fabric strip.
- Do not touch the front of the tank top. You should only cut out the back. Sports tank tops have a regular neckline at the front.
- If you want to make a simple sports jersey, you can skip this step and start wearing your garment right away. The following steps will show you how to make a more fashionable sport-style tank top.
- 6 Tie one end of a long strip of fabric at the bottom of the V-neck at the back. Find the bottom of the cutout and measure a few centimeters up from it. Take the fabric strip that you cut from the T-shirt earlier and tie it at this location. She should gather the fabric left between the two armholes.
- 7 Wind the tied strip of fabric around the vertical space between the shoulder blades, moving downward. Try to wrap the fabric as tightly as possible so that it practically turns into a rope between the shoulder blades. Stop when you reach the bottom of the armholes.
- 8 Wind up the rest of the fabric strip and secure the end at the top. To fix the end of the fabric strip, you can simply slip it under the wound layers of fabric. For greater reliability, the ends of the fabric strip can be pre-tied together with a knot.
- 9 Consider shortening the front of your tank top. Spread the top sideways so that you only see one side seam, half of the front and half of the back. Find the folded front of the tank top. Measure up from its bottom edge a few centimeters, and then cut the fabric in a descending smooth line from this point to the bottom point of the middle of the rear. When you're done, the top will be shorter in the front and longer in the back.
- 10 Try on a sports jersey top. You do not need to worry about the processing of the cuts of the shirt-top, as the knitwear does not crumble. Sports tank tops look great over bandage tops and are great for athletic training.
Tips
- If this is your first time sewing, take a cheap old T-shirt to practice. In this case, when you make a gross mistake, you do not have to throw out the good thing.
- There is no need to overcast seam allowances and hemming of fabric edges on such T-shirts-tops, as the jersey of T-shirts does not crumble.
- The seam allowance is the amount of fabric that will protrude beyond the padded stitching.
- If you don't know how to sew, you can ask someone else or use permanent fabric glue. It works just fine, is inexpensive, and holds fabric just as securely as stitches. You can find it in fabric stores.
- A sports-type tank top differs from a regular tank top in that it has very large armholes on the back.
- To make a tee-top, it is ideal to take an old tee that you no longer wear.
- If your T-shirt is too wide, you can sew it in from the sides for a snug fit. When you are going to install new seams, remember to include a seam allowance of about 1 cm.
