Barley is a nutty-flavored grain rich in gluten and other important minerals. It pairs well with spices and can be processed to produce alcohol. Depending on how you cook it, barley can be soft or hard in texture. Try the basic barley cooking methods below, or experiment with baked barley, barley soup, or barley salad.

Ingredients

Basic barley preparation

  • 1 cup barley
  • 2 - 3 glasses of water

Baked barley

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup barley
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped

Barley soup

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 stalks of chopped celery
  • 1 carrot, peeled and chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Half a kilogram of mushrooms, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 2 liters beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup barley
  • 2 teaspoons of salt

Barley salad

  • 2 cups cooked barley
  • ½ bowl of chopped tomatoes
  • ¼ bowls of chopped onions
  • 1 cup shredded feta cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of tap wine vinegar
  • ½ tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Basic Barley Cooking

  1. 1 Pour water into a large saucepan. Pour the water over the barley.
  2. 2 Place a lid on the pot and bring the water to a boil.
  3. 3 When the water boils, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. 4 Cook until all the water is absorbed by the barley.
  5. 5 Turn off the fire. Without stirring, let the barley brew for 15 minutes.
  6. 6 Add cooked barley to salad or soup, or add various spices and oil to it and serve as a side dish.

Method 2 of 4: Baked barley

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. 2 Pour two cups of water into a saucepan. Boil water.
  3. 3 Place the barley in a glass or ceramic baking dish. Pour the boiling water into a mold. Get in the way.
  4. 4 Add oil and salt and mix well.
  5. 5 Cover the dish with a lid or aluminum foil. Place the dish in the oven and bake for an hour.
  6. 6 Remove the dish from the oven. Place on a serving platter and serve with the main course.

Method 3 of 4: Barley Soup

  1. 1 Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. 2 Add onions, carrots and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are translucent. This should take about five minutes.
  3. 3 Add garlic. Cook for another two minutes.
  4. 4 Add mushrooms. Continue cooking until the mushrooms are tender.
  5. 5 Sprinkle flour on the vegetables.
  6. 6 Pour the broth into a saucepan. Cook over medium heat and bring the soup to a low boil.
  7. 7 Add barley and salt to the soup.
  8. 8 Cook over low heat. Cook for an hour, stirring occasionally with a spoon. The soup is done when the barley is tender and the soup thickens.

Method 4 of 4: Barley Salad

  1. 1 Prepare one glass of barley according to the basic barley recipe above.
  2. 2 Place the cooked barley in a bowl. Add tomatoes, onions and feta cheese.
  3. 3 In another bowl, combine the red wine vinegar, olive oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Take a broom and stir the ingredients for a minute.
  4. 4 Pour the sauce over the barley. Mix well with a spoon.
  5. 5 Ready.
