If you have grown a record harvest of garlic and are already unsure of what to do with it, try making homemade garlic powder.A pinch of this seasoning added to any dish will add a distinctly piquant flavor to your food. If you have bought garlic powder in the store before and are in doubt whether you will be able to make a quality seasoning with your own hands, put your fears and doubts aside! By following the tips in this article, you can easily prepare garlic powder that tastes better and tastes better than the one sold in stores.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Preparing the Garlic

  1. 1 Divide the heads of garlic into individual cloves. Remove the top scales from the heads of the garlic and divide each head into separate cloves. The amount of garlic powder you get depends on how many cloves of garlic you use to prepare it. On average, one head of garlic contains ten cloves, sometimes one or two more, and sometimes less.
    • If you need a small serving of garlic powder, just take one head. To make more seasoning, increase the original amount of raw garlic.
  2. 2 Peel the cloves of garlic. The dense outer shells covering each garlic clove can be removed by hand or using a knife. Place the wedge on a cutting board and press down on top with the flat surface of the knife blade. Press gently on the knife - the shell will burst, and you can easily separate it from the wedge.
    • Do not press down on the knife too hard, or you will flatten the garlic clove. Press down gently on the knife until you hear a soft click. You can then remove the cracked husk with your fingers, leaving an intact wedge that you can cut into slices.
  3. 3 Cut each wedge into thin slices. Using a knife, cut off the tough ends from each clove of garlic. These parts are quite tough and can be removed without compromising the taste of the final product. Then cut each wedge into thin slices using a sharp kitchen knife. You should end up with longitudinal plates about 6 millimeters thick (or even thinner).
    • When you have cut all the garlic cloves, place the wedges on a baking tray or vegetable drier tray, lined with parchment paper.

Part 2 of 2: Cooking Garlic Powder

  1. 1 Dry the garlic in the oven. Garlic can be dried using a fruit and vegetable dryer or in the oven. If you decide to use the oven for these purposes, it should be preheated by choosing one of the lowest temperature modes for this. For most models of ovens, this will be a mode in the range from 60 to 100 ° C. When the oven heats up to the desired temperature, place a baking sheet with laid out garlic slices in it and leave for one and a half to two hours.
    • When you dry the garlic, periodically open the oven and stir the garlic so that all the slices dry evenly. Remove the baking sheet with garlic from the oven and wait for the plates to cool.
    • To check if the garlic is well dried, try kneading the slices with your fingers: they should break easily, crunch and crumble.
  2. 2 Dry the garlic with a vegetable and fruit dryer (dehydrator). If you decide to use a vegetable dryer for this purpose, set it to a low temperature setting (about 50 ° C). Place the pan of garlic strips in the dryer and let sit for 8-12 hours.
    • When you take the garlic out of the dryer, the strips should break apart when touched. By this indicator, you can easily determine if the garlic has dried well enough.
  3. 3 Grind the dried garlic into a powder. For this purpose, you can use a coffee grinder, blender, food processor, or even a mortar and pestle. Grind the garlic until you get the powder you want. Sift through the garlic powder with your fingers and remove any remaining large pieces. You can collect these pieces and grind them again.
    • If you want coarsely ground garlic powder, do not grind the garlic for too long.Conversely, if you want to get a finely ground powder, the lightest garlic powder, grind the dried plates a little longer.
    • Leave the garlic powder in a coffee grinder (or other grinder) for 10 minutes. During this time, the particles of garlic powder and volatile components will settle, and you will not have to inhale the strong garlic smell.
  4. 4 Combine flavors to create a new seasoning. If you have onion powder, chili powder, paprika flakes, or other suitable spices on hand, mix the freshly made garlic powder with the spices and seasonings you have. As a result, you will get an original seasoning with a rich taste and aroma.
    • This seasoning can be used in all kinds of dishes, including pizza and pasta.
  5. 5 Store garlic powder properly. Pour the garlic powder into an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Glass jars with screw lids (usually used for home canning) are great for storing garlic powder.
    • You can store the garlic powder in the freezer if you like.
