When shaving, men adhere to a long-established hygienic tradition of personal care. Most men learned to shave through the example of their father, uncle, or older brother: those who passed on these skills to the younger generation. But, unfortunately, many people adopt from their relatives not only the wrong shaving technique, but also bad habits. If you are constantly experiencing burning, irritation, and cuts after shaving, read these tips. Follow them and your skin will soon be healthy and smooth.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: How to Prevent Shaving Irritation

  1. 1 Take a hot shower or just wash yourself with warm water. A hot shower will cleanse the pores of your face much more effectively than just washing your face. But in the morning you don't always have time to take a shower. When you wash, wash your face with warm water and soap. This will soften the hairs and clear the face of accumulated bacteria that clog pores and lead to irritation.
    • Plus, it opens pores and cleanses the skin (skin should be warm too). Thus, you not only prevent the appearance of irritation, but also eliminate unevenness in the skin in advance, which makes shaving softer.
  2. 2 Apply shaving oil to your skin beforehand. This is an optional step, but using an oily foundation will create another layer of protection and hydration for your skin, and will keep your hairs aligned more evenly. The straighter and straighter the hairs, the less likely they are to curl, grow into the skin and form bumps (which is why shaving is a little more difficult for people with curly hair).
    • Oddly enough, you can buy the oil you need to apply to your skin before shaving at a health store (as well as pharmacies and beauty stores). It must not be eaten! This silicone-based product is only used to reduce friction while shaving and soften hairs.
  3. 3 Apply shaving gel to your skin and massage until a thick lather appears over the hairs. The thicker the foam layer, the better. Never shave dry skin!... Some men find it easier to apply gel and create lather with a shaving brush. Reapply before each shaver.
    • Usually, the choice of shaving gel / foam depends on everyone's taste. However, the best foods are those based on glycerin and containing the following ingredients: water, stearic acid, myristic acid, coconut acid, sodium and potassium hydroxide, triethanolamine. It is best to avoid shaving products that contain benzocaine and menthol as they clog your pores.
  4. 4 Always use a clean, sharp blade. A dull and dirty blade will scratch and damage skin much more than a sharp blade. Remember to change your razor blade in time, especially if you shave frequently. Clean the blade after shaving, rinse off the hairs - this will prolong its life. If you notice rust on the blade, throw it away immediately.
    • You can extend the life of your shaver with good care. Rinse off any hairs stuck in the blade, but do not leave the blade wet - water will ruin the blade.
  5. 5 Shaver movements should be directed in the direction of hair growth. You probably think that shaving against the direction of hair growth makes your skin smoother. However, hair grows differently after shaving, which increases the risk of shaving irritation and ingrown hairs.
    • Press down lightly on the razor. If you press too hard on the razor, or rub the razor over the same area of skin several times in a row, irritation will develop.
    • Don't stretch your skin! If you shave your pubis, it will be necessary to tighten the skin a little, but this is not necessary when shaving your face.
  6. 6 Take care of the brush used to apply the shaving gel. You might think that a dirty razor blade is the cause of your irritation after shaving. This is partially true, but, in fact, the brush can also be dangerous to the skin. Therefore, you need to make sure that the brush is clean. After shaving, you need to wash it - this is necessary in order to prevent bacteria from entering the brush and their reproduction.
    • After using the brush, hang it with the bristles down. The shape of the brush should remain as it is - this will reduce the number of bacteria on it. It will also help reduce skin irritation. So everyone wins! Except bacteria, of course.
  7. 7 Rinse off the shaving gel or foam with cold water. Warm water opens pores, making it easier for the shaver to grip hairs. Cold water closes the pores after shaving, making it harder for bacteria to get inside the pores. You started your shaving routine with a hot shower, right? So end it with a cold shower!
    • You can apply a damp, cool cloth to your face for five minutes to finish shaving. In fact, the longer you cool your skin, the better.
  8. 8 You can apply Alum block to the shaved area. It looks like soap, but it can be used as a blood coagulant. It can be ordered online or bought at any professional cosmetics store - this stone closes pores more effectively than just cold water. This step is optional, but many people prefer to use a stone.
    • This remedy is especially useful for treating accidental cuts. If you accidentally cut yourself with a sharp razor, wet the stone with water and apply it to the shaved area. It acts like an antiseptic!
  9. 9 Apply aftershave to your skin, or spray with a special lotion or balm. Choose a product with a pleasant scent that you enjoy. Using aftershave lotion will help prevent infection. If you're the Chuck Norris / MacGyver type of man, why don't you do it yourself? However, it is better not to use gasoline instead of lotion, as Chuck Norris does :)
    • This step is essential to moisturize your skin. Buy an alcohol-free aftershave to keep your skin hydrated. Previously, not everyone knew this, but now it is important to remember this.
      • You can choose a lotion designed specifically for sensitive skin. If you know well that your skin reacts to everything in the world, it is better to spend the extra 100 rubles and buy a good product.

Part 2 of 3: How to shave your pubis

  1. 1 Trim your hairs. If you have a whole forest on your pubis, you will not leave a razor a chance! Trim the hairs to about 0.6 cm before using the blade. Don't want to use scissors? No problem! You can use an electric trimmer to trim your pubic hair. But be careful not to cut yourself!
    • You don't have to cut your hair to make it look perfect, it just needs to be short enough for a razor. Don't forget about the hardest-to-reach areas!
  2. 2 Wet your hairs. If you've taken the time to read the tips for shaving your face, then you can say that the same rules apply here. You need to soak your hair follicles with warm or hot water to open your pores. The skin will be more susceptible to shaving, which will make it smoother.
    • This can be done in a number of ways. First, you can take a shower or a bath - this is the best option. The more time you spend in the water, the better. However, you can simply wet the groin area if you are on a time limit.
  3. 3 Now get on with exfoliating dead skin cells. Did you think that this should be done a little later? If you want to get rid of dead skin cells (relax, everyone has them!) And make your hair straighter and straighter (making it easier to shave off), you need to exfoliate the dead skin cells. Shower gel can do an excellent job with this task.
  4. 4 Lather your groin area well. Yes, this is not very pleasant, but try to step over your pride and grab your girlfriend's (wife's) shaving gel. Honestly, ladies' shaving foam / gel is better for sensitive areas and does not contain harsh fragrances. If you are not confused by a pink tube or container - great!
    • Do not use the same gel you use to shave your face. Choose a product that is designed to shave intimate areas (and is fragrance free). You, most likely, already understand that the skin of the face and the groin area is different.
  5. 5 Stretch your skin a little and shave. The razor (preferably new) should slide on a smooth, level surface, so stretch your skin and shave in the direction of hair growth to prevent cuts and irritation. Yes, yes, yes, shaving against hair growth will help you achieve a cleaner shave, but this article is not about that. If you really want to avoid cuts and irritation, it is best to shave in the direction of hair growth.
    • Use a good razor. Throw away your razor after using it several times. After a certain number of shaves, the razor (or replacement blade) loses its sharpness, which can lead to the spread of infection on the skin and the appearance of unevenness and irritation. Handle the razor carefully, rinse off the hairs after shaving and dry, otherwise the water will quickly ruin the metal blade.
  6. 6 Exfoliate your skin again. Now that you've shaved your skin, it's time to once again exfoliate the "extra" dead skin cells. Take regular soap (if you know it won't pinch) and rub it over your groin area. Thus, you will straighten hairs, get rid of dead skin cells and ingrown hairs, and open clogged pores. Triple victory!
    • If you decide to peel, follow this step. You don't want bacteria to get into hair follicles and ingrown hairs and multiply there. All these steps help prevent this outcome!
  7. 7 Dry and moisturize your skin. Once you've gone through the steps above, it's time to dry and moisturize your skin. First, when wiping your skin, do not rub it too hard, as this will irritate. Simply pat your skin dry with a towel. Then apply unscented lotion, aloe vera, or baby oil. Remember that a ruble invested in prevention will save you 100 rubles on treatment.
    • Of course, you don't need to apply lotion. Do you want to call an ambulance right away? Use a lotion and shaving gel that is free of alcohol and fragrance. You can apply baby oil, but only if you don't plan on having sex afterward, because the oil has a negative effect on latex condoms.
  8. 8 Wear loose-fitting clothing. Have you noticed that when you put on tight clothes in the gym and then exercise, then soon after that you get pimples? Therefore, wear loose clothing that will reduce the risk of irritation. The shaved area needs to breathe - this is an excuse to wear sweatpants.
    • In fact, the same applies to the face if you are wearing clothes that cover your face. If you wear turtlenecks and scarves to cover up irritation after shaving, keep in mind that you are only making the situation worse!

Part 3 of 3: Treating and Preventing Irritation

  1. 1 Try shaving less often. This is not the wise advice you were hoping for, is it? But it’s true: the less often you shave, the less trauma to the top layer of your face, which leads to less irritation. If you can skip a day and not shave, do so. The skin will be grateful to you for this!
    • If you already have irritation, give it time to heal. Do not shave for several days to help the irritation go away. Of course, you don't need to grow a beard to the waist (but it will be good for your skin if you do). Just grow the stubble. In this case, the irritation will go away on its own.
  2. 2 Apply something warm to the area of irritation. If you already have irritation and cuts before you even found this article on safe, close shaving, apply a warm compress to the area of irritation for 5-10 minutes. This will open up your pores and kill microorganisms that cause red, swollen bumps on your skin.
  3. 3 Apply a glycolic acid cream to heal irritation. This cream can be found in many drug stores. Salicylic acid is also quite effective against irritation. Apply this cream immediately after shaving and again at bedtime. You may feel a slight tingling sensation, but it will soon disappear.
    • As a last resort, an aloe vera ointment or hydrocortisone ointment will also help. Most likely, your mom / sister or roommate has these products in your first aid kit.
  4. 4 Don't pop your pimples! It's almost like asking you not to watch a car accident, right? But try to overcome this desire! It is better to let the pimples remain on the face, because with the intervention there is a very high risk of infecting. The sebum and bacteria that accumulate on your fingers will definitely not improve the situation.
    • Don't rub pimples. When in doubt, it's best not to touch them at all. Over time, they will pass by themselves. Have patience, young Jedi.

Tips

  • Keep your skin healthy by washing your face regularly and using moisturizing lotions, even on days you don't shave.
  • If the razor is still too aggressive for your skin, change it to a different razor. The safety razor puts less pressure on your skin and therefore results in less irritation.
  • Always use shaving cream. Shaving dry skin or skin with soapy water is a VERY BAD decision that you will most likely regret very soon.
  • Mix some talcum powder, aloe gel and / or Sudocrem until you have a paste. Then apply this paste to the affected area, patting lightly. Finally, add a few drops of tea tree oil and some more talcum powder to the mixture. It may be a tricky and slightly messy method, but it has an instant cooling effect!
  • A safety razor will help you avoid excessive pressure on your skin because the razor is heavy enough to glide well over your skin. After shaving, the skin will remain smooth.
