Special codes are required for international calls. To call Mexico from the United States, follow these steps.

Steps

1. 1 Dial 011. This is an international access code that allows calls outside the country.
2. 2 Dial 52. This is the country code for Mexico.
3. 3 If you are calling a mobile phone, dial 1.
4. 4 Dial the area code where you want to call. This will be a two or three digit code that will direct your call to a region or city. Codes of the three largest cities:
   • Mexico City: 55
   • Monterrey: 81
   • Guadalajara: 33
5. 5 Dial the rest of the phone number. This will be a seven or eight digit number.

Tips

• Remember to take the time difference into account when calling abroad.
• Some mobile operators have plans that include Mexico in their service area.
• If you have followed the above steps, but still cannot get through, dial 00 and ask an international operator to help you make the call.

Warnings

• Use virtual calling cards (Pinless) for international calls. Tariffs on these cards are cheaper than on your home or mobile phone. These cards are generally cheaper than physical cards as they do not have production overheads.
• Calls to a mobile phone can cost two or even three times more.
• Try to call abroad in the evening or on weekends, as rates are usually cheaper at these times.
