It may seem that hanging an object on a brick wall is a difficult or even impossible task, but it is not. If you want to hang a heavy object and be sure the object is securely attached to the wall, use anchor hooks. To do this, you need to drill holes in the seam of the brickwork or in the bricks and screw the anchor hooks into them. Self-adhesive and wall-hooks can also be used, but these are only suitable for lightweight items.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Drill the holes for the anchors

  1. 1 Buy anchors that are rated for the weight of the item you want to hang. Weigh the item on a scale to determine its weight. Buy anchors that are rated either for the weight of your item or, even better, for a higher weight.
    • For example, if you are going to hang a 3kg painting, buy anchors that can support 4.5kg.
    • Anchors suitable for masonry are available from building supplies stores.
    • If you are going to hang a large, heavy object, use multiple anchors. For example, a picture in a frame weighing 4.5 kg can be hung on two anchors, each of which is designed for 2.5 kg.
  2. 2 Prepare a drill and a set of concrete drills to match the size of the anchors. If you do not have a drill or drill, you can purchase one at a building supplies store. Choose a drill bit that is slightly narrower in diameter than the anchor screws to ensure they fit snugly into the wall.
    • For example, if you are using 6mm anchors, select a 4mm drill bit.
    • The anchor packages are marked with their diameter.
  3. 3 Determine if you will be drilling a hole in a brickwork seam or in a brick. It is better to drill a hole in the seam, as the mortar between the bricks is softer than the bricks. The hole can also be drilled in brick, but this will take a little more time and effort.
    • Another reason to drill a hole in the seam is that there may be voids in the bricks, which will not hold the anchor firmly enough in the wall.

Specialist recommendation: “I always drill holes in the seam of the brickwork as close as possible to where I am going to hang the item. If you suddenly make a mistake, you can fill the hole with new mortar, but if you make a hole in the brick, it will remain forever. "

  4. 4 Mark the locations of the holes to be drilled. Use a marker or pencil to mark where you will drill the holes. Remember that the holes must be several screw diameters apart. If you drill too close together, mortar or brick may crack.
    • If you want to hang a light object, one anchor will suffice.
    • If you want to hang a heavy item, place two anchors on the sides of the item to ensure a secure fit. Before drilling holes, measure the height of each screw and check with a level the line between the two marks. If the deviation of the line from the horizontal plane is too strong, correct the location of the marks.
  5. 5 Drill holes in the marked locations. Drill slowly, keeping the drill perpendicular to the wall. Remember that the drill bit must be thinner than the anchor screw.
    • Drill holes slightly deeper than the length of the screws. For example, if the screws are 2 cm long, drill holes 2.1 cm deep.
    • Once you have drilled the hole, remove the drill from the wall by rotating the drill in the opposite direction to extract the drill meal from the hole. You can also clean the hole from dust with a brush.

Part 2 of 3: Install anchors

  1. 1 Insert the screw into the anchor sleeve. Use a type of anchor, which is a metal sleeve with a screw hole and a hook at the end. Insert the bit corresponding to the slot of the screw into the drill chuck. Screw the screw into the anchor and go to the very depth of the hole drilled in the wall.
    • Some anchors have a washer between the screw and the sleeve.
  2. 2 Screw in the hook anchor. For this type of anchors, the screw is made in the form of a hook. To secure the anchor, screw the hook into the drilled hole in the wall.
  3. 3 Tighten the screws by hand. If you have used sleeve anchors, take a screwdriver and screw in the screws until they stop. Make sure they don't wobble. If you have used hook anchors, screw them in so that the hooks are facing up and firmly in the wall.
  4. 4 Hang the item on a brick wall. If you want to hang a framed painting, it must have a string that can be hung on a hook. Other items may have holes, hangers, ears, or other parts that can be hung on hooks in the wall.
    • If there is nothing to hang your item on, take a walk to the building materials store. These stores sell many different hooks and hangers that you can attach to your item.

Part 3 of 3: Hang light items without installing anchors

  1. 1 Use mesh hooks. This type of hook is made specifically for the height of a standard brick. There is a clamp on the back of the hook, which is designed to grip the narrow part of the brick protruding above the seam of the masonry. Secure the hook to the brick with a clamp.
    • Due to the fact that these hooks do not screw tightly into a brick wall, you should not hang heavy objects on them.
  2. 2 Use self-adhesive hooks. Peel off the top layer from the flat side of the hook to expose the adhesive layer. To secure the hook to the wall, press the adhesive side of the hook against the wall.
    • Use heavy-duty self-adhesive hooks - they will hold onto the brick wall more firmly.
    • Do not hang objects weighing more than the intended weight from these hooks.
  3. 3 Place pieces of double-sided tape on the wall. Use high-strength double-sided tape. Peel off the top layer on one side and press the tape firmly against the wall with the sticky side. Peel off the top layer on the second side and press the item you want to hang against the sticky surface.
    • Even high-strength double-sided tape can only withstand light items such as photographs in cardboard frames.
