Save money and the environment by building a pond filtration system. It's good for fish too!

Steps

  1. 1 Find an old plastic waste bin with a lid. Make a drainage hole in it on the side near the bottom. Position the tank so that the drain from the outlet returns to the pond.
  2. 2 Fill the tank with clean filter material.
  3. 3 Submerge the waterproof pump in the pond. Connect the pump outlet pipe to the top of the filled tank.
  4. 4 Switch on the pump. Water will flow to the top of the tank, then through the filter media, and back through the drain hole into the pond.
  5. 5 Ready.

Tips

  • If you want to connect the water supply at the bottom of the tank, then you can find equipment (it will be listed as plumbing equipment for the rain barrel). The benefit of pumping water through the top is that it creates height for the waterfall and, if a filter is connected, your pond will not be dry. You will need to start with a container with a spout or lip - the bigger the better - and use lava stones for filtration, they work great.
  • If it is possible to make a smaller version of this system, make it out of a plastic shoebox. The smaller version can be located in the pond, connected in front of the pump so that the pond water is sucked in through the filter instead of being poured over the top.
  • You can fill the trash can with alternative materials - half of clean gravel, then top with filter foam.

Warnings

  • If the electric pump is not installed correctly, an electric shock may result.
