Mosquito nets are susceptible to wind, water, dust, dirt, insects and more, causing them to quickly become dirty. Learn to wash your nets properly so they look good and last longer. It is quite simple and does not require much preparation or special tools.

Steps

Part 1 of 4: Prepare

  1. 1 Remove the mesh from the window. Before washing the mosquito net, it must be removed from the window. This will help you clean the mesh better and easier.If you are going to wash the mosquito net, be sure to remove it from the window.
    • The way in which you can remove the mosquito net depends on its type.
    • Many mosquito nets have small tabs that you need to pull out to remove the nets from the window frame.
    • Be careful not to damage or tear the mesh.
  2. 2 Find a suitable place to wash the mesh. After you remove the mosquito net from the window frame, look for a convenient place to splash and spill water safely. Make sure the hose reaches this point. Move the mosquito net there and get ready to wash it.
    • The chosen location should be spacious enough.
    • Choose a place where you can splash the water and it will drain or dry quickly.
    • You can lay a tarp on the ground to avoid damaging the net from sharp branches and stones.
  3. 3 Prepare a cleaning solution. To properly clean your mosquito net, you will need a bucket of aqueous ammonia solution. This mixture will break down and wash away dirt, dust and other foreign matter from the mesh. To start washing the mesh, it remains to mix ammonia and water.
    • Dilute one part of ammonia in three parts of water.
    • If you don't have ammonia on hand, you can dilute a mild soap in warm water.
    • When preparing the solution and washing the mesh, be sure to wear rubber gloves.
    • After you add ammonia to the water, mix the liquid thoroughly to get a homogeneous solution.
    • If you don't have ammonia, you can use a mild dishwashing detergent instead.

Part 2 of 4: Wash the mesh

  1. 1 Hose the mesh. First, water the mesh with a garden hose. This will remove most of the dirt and dust. Sprinkle water over the entire surface of the mesh before wiping it with a cleaning solution.
    • Start watering the net from the top and gradually work your way down.
    • Use the lightest pressure on the hose to avoid damaging the mesh.
    • Turn the net over and spray it with water from the other side.
  2. 2 Wash the mesh with an aqueous solution of ammonia. After you've sprinkled water on the mosquito net, you can wash it with a cleaning solution. Gently scrub the mesh with a soft bristle brush and cleaning solution to remove deep-seated grime. Rub the entire surface of the mesh and try to clean it as best you can.
    • Rub the mesh in small circular motions.
    • Be careful. Do not press too hard on the brush to avoid tearing the mesh.
    • Rinse the brush periodically and remove accumulated dirt from it so that it does not fall back onto the net.
    • Wipe the mosquito net on both sides.
  3. 3 Use a sponge to wipe off any remaining dirt. With a brush and cleaning solution, you will separate the dirt from the mesh and remove most of it. Any remaining dirt can be wiped off with a sponge. The sponge will absorb dirt and residual cleaning solution and the mesh will be clean.
    • Remember to wipe down the mesh frame.
    • After that, you can inspect the mesh and check if you have missed individual sections.
    • Wipe the mosquito net on both sides.

Part 3 of 4: Dry and install the mesh

  1. 1 Rinse the mesh. After making sure the mesh is clean, you can rinse it with water. Gently blow out the mesh with a garden hose to remove any residual cleaning solution and dirt from the mesh. Remember to thoroughly rinse the mesh before drying and reinstalling it.
    • Do not run water under high pressure.
    • Spray the entire surface of the mesh with water.
    • It is best to rinse the mesh on both sides.
  2. 2 Wait for the mesh to dry. Once you are happy with how the mesh looks after washing, let it dry completely before putting it back on the window. If you want to dry your mesh quickly and properly, try the following:
    • wipe the mesh with a dry rag or towel;
    • shake the mesh slightly to shake off excess water;
    • lean the mesh against the wall so that water can drain from it;
    • Place the mesh in the sun to dry it faster.
  3. 3 Place the mesh back on the window. Once the clean mesh is dry, it can be installed on the window frame. To do this, you can repeat what you did when you removed the mesh, but in reverse order. When finished, make sure the mesh is securely attached.

Part 4 of 4: Keep your mesh clean

  1. 1 Remove dust at least once a week. To keep the mosquito net looking good, do not let dust and dirt accumulate on it. To clean the mosquito net less often, dust it off once a week. When doing this, adhere to the following basic rules:
    • use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment;
    • carefully sweep the vacuum cleaner along the entire surface of the mesh;
    • if possible, vacuum the mesh on both sides;
    • when cleaning the mesh, it is better to move from top to bottom.
  2. 2 If necessary, wash the mesh in separate areas. There is no need to remove the mosquito net every time to wash it. If you find that it gets dirty in some place, prepare a water solution of soap and wash off the dirt without removing the screen from the window. In this case, you can proceed as follows:
    • Pour warm water into a bucket and dilute some mild soap in it;
    • take a small sponge and dip it in soapy water;
    • gently wipe the dirty area with a sponge;
    • if you have to scrape off dirt, do it carefully so as not to tear the mesh;
    • wipe the washed mesh with a towel.
  3. 3 Clean the mesh regularly. The more often you clean the mosquito nets, the less often you will have to remove them from the windows and wash them. Try to clean the nets every time you clean the house, and they will look like new.
