1 Mix black and white. The result is a color called neutral gray.
  • Neutral gray is the purest shade of gray as it has no impurities or other tones.
  • Equal parts of black and white should give a medium gray tint. The intensity of the color can be changed by adding either one or the other color. More black will result in dark gray, and more white will result in light gray.
  • 2 Mix the secondary colors in equal proportions. The result is a color known as secondary gray.
    • Basic complementary colors:
      • red and green;
      • yellow and purple;
      • blue and orange.
    • By mixing equal parts of any two complementary colors, you get a dull gray color, but its depth can be increased by adding more of one of the two original colors. If you add more red, yellow or orange, you can get a "warm" gray, and if you add more green, purple or blue, you can get a "cool" gray.
  • 3 Mix three primary colors. This will give you a "base gray" color.
    • The three primary colors are red, blue and yellow.
    • Blending equal parts of these colors produces a dull shade of gray, but you can add depth to it by increasing the amount of which color you use.More blue will give a cooler hue, and more red or yellow without increasing blue will give warmer hues.
  • Method 2 of 4: How to get gray paint

    1. 1 Decide what kind of gray you want. Neutral grays, secondary grays, and primary grays are easy to mix with paint, but it depends on what paints you have and what you want the gray for.
      • Neutral gray is great for toning other colors without changing their hue. As such, it is the perfect choice if you want the purest shade of gray.
      • Secondary grays are great for producing warm or cool grays.
      • Basic gray is good for painting shadows or combining gray with another brighter color. Since a base gray includes all three base colors, its adjacent base color will appear brighter.
    2. 2 Mix equal parts of the selected colors. Pour an equal amount of the desired colors into a cup or palette. Mix them thoroughly with a palette knife until smooth.
      • Let's repeat the possible color combinations:
        • black and white;
        • red and green;
        • yellow and purple;
        • blue and orange;
        • red, yellow and blue.
      • After mixing the colors, you should get a gray paint. If you have used "pure" shades, the resulting gray should be relatively dull. If the colors were not pure, a slight tint is possible.
    3. 3 Lighten or darken the color if desired. Consider the tone of the resulting gray. If it comes out too light or too dark, you can add white or black paint to it to change its brightness.
      • Add white to lighten the gray and black to darken. Add paint in small splashes so that you don't accidentally change the brightness more than necessary.
      • To change the brightness of the gray, use white and black regardless of which type of gray (neutral, secondary, or primary) you get. Adding any other color will ultimately change hue rather than brightness.
    4. 4 Shade the color as desired. Consider the shade of the resulting gray. If it looks too dull, add colors to it.
      • Whatever color you decide to use, add small splashes of it. If you don't like the result, it will be much easier to fix it if you add paint in small amounts.
      • If you made a secondary or primary gray, add any of the colors used to create the original gray. In other words, if you mixed blue and orange to get gray, add only blue or orange (not red, yellow, green, or purple).
      • If you made a neutral gray, you can still change its tone with a different color. In general, to get a variety of shades, you can add almost any color to gray.

    Method 3 of 4: How to make the gray frosting

    1. 1 Select the type of gray. A neutral gray glaze is easiest to make, but you can also get a secondary gray or a primary gray.
      • If you want a pure color, it is better to choose a neutral gray, and if you want a tinted color, it is better to choose any of the other two types.
      • Since ready-made liquid food color kits usually have red, yellow, green, and blue colors, you should be able to prepare a primary (red, yellow, blue) gray or a secondary (red and green) gray if you plan on using regular liquid food coloring. ... But if you buy professional gel or paste food colors, you can get any of the three color types, as they have a wider range of colors.
    2. 2 Place the desired colors in the white frosting. Transfer the required amount of white frosting to a glass cup. Gradually add the desired colors and mix thoroughly until smooth.
      • We remind you of possible color combinations:
        • black and white (please note: you not you need to add a white dye, since the glaze itself is already white);
        • blue and orange;
        • yellow and purple;
        • red and green;
        • red, yellow and blue.
      • Add liquid colorant by squeezing it drop by drop from the dropper cap. A dye gel or paste is added by dipping a toothpick into the dye and using it to transfer a small amount of the dye into the glaze.
    3. 3 For a darker shade of gray, add black. If you like a shade of gray but want to darken the tone a little, mix a little black dye into the glaze until you get the desired result.
      • The glaze can be darkened with black, no matter what color you used to achieve the gray tint.
      • Conversely, you can get a brighter color by adding the original colors to the glaze. Greater concentration of colors will make the gray brighter. However, it must be remembered that to preserve the shade, you need to use exactly the same amount of dyes.
    4. 4 Shade the gray with a different color if desired. If gray seems dull to you, try adding a small amount of some other color to it to change the hue a little.
      • Neutral gray can be tinted with almost any other color.
      • Secondary grays and primary grays can be tinted only by adding more of the colors used to obtain them. For example, if you made a gray glaze using red, blue, and yellow dyes, you can only use red, blue, or yellow dye to change the hue (not green, purple, or orange).

    Method 4 of 4: How to Make Gray Polymer Clay

    1. 1 Choose the shade of gray you want to achieve. By using polymer clay, both neutral and secondary as well as primary gray can be obtained. Choose the option that works best for you.
      • If you want a pure gray with no tints, it is best to choose a neutral gray.
      • However, if you want a gray with some tint, it will be easier to choose a secondary or primary color, as in this case you will need less raw materials.
    2. 2 Pinch off equal parts of the original colors. Take an equal amount of polymer clay of the desired colors. Knead the pieces in your hands, then stir them together.
      • The following colors can be selected:
        • black and white;
        • blue and orange;
        • red and green;
        • yellow and purple;
        • red, yellow and green.
      • To mix colors, simply sculpt two pieces of clay together and roll them between your palms, flattening and kneading as needed. Continue the process until smooth. The plastic should take on a uniformly gray color.
    3. 3 Lighten the color if desired. If you want to lighten the color without changing the hue, mix a piece of transparent clay into the ball.
      • Transparent clay has no color, so it will not change the tone or shade of gray. It will simply give the gray less brightness and intensity.
      • When deciding how much clear clay to use, remember that the total amount should not exceed a third of the amount of gray clay.
    4. 4 Lighten the tone if desired. If you want to lighten the tone of the gray clay, add a small amount of white clay to the gray ball.
      • White can be added regardless of the colors used to produce the gray.
      • In theory, the color can be darkened by adding black clay, but it can easily spoil the color. Therefore, it is much easier to darken a neutral gray color in this way, in which there is already a black component.
    5. 5 Consider changing the tone of the clay. When you're happy with the color saturation and hue, decide if you want to change the hue.
      • Shade the clay by adding a small amount of one of the colors.
      • Almost any color can be used to change the tone of a neutral gray clay, but in the case of a secondary or primary gray, only one of the original colors can be used.
