The American Express Platinum Card offers a higher level of benefits than the American Express Green and Gold Cards. Benefits include a reward system, 4 complimentary airline tickets per year for a companion, access to the airport club, and a 24-hour concierge service to assist with gift purchases and travel arrangements. The Platinum Card is popular with frequent travelers and people heading to luxury destinations. While the company initially offered the payment card to existing American Express customers with a 2-year history of cooperation, new customers can now complete the Platinum Card application online.

Steps

1. 1 Get your credit report and credit rating. Before you apply for an American Express Platinum Card, you must have a credit rating above 720 for the highest likelihood of a positive decision.
2. 2 Get any credit scores in good shape.
   • Pay off outstanding debts, leaving no more than 30 percent of your available credit limit.
   • Always pay your bills on time to improve your credit score and increase the likelihood of your card application being approved.
   • Challenge any mistakes in your credit report that could downgrade your credit rating.
3. 3 Go to the American Express website to complete the application. Select the option for the Platinum Card and click "Fill out the application".
   • If you don't have an American Express account yet, sign up. If you are a new customer, select the option to create a new account.
   • Enter your name the way you want it to appear on the card.
   • Enter your name, your email and home address, your Social Security number, and your date of birth at specific locations in the Personal Information section. Provide any additional information requested in your Platinum Card application.
   • Complete the employment section with your company name, city, and work phone number.
   • Go to the financial information section. Enter your total household income and select your source of income from the drop-down menu. Check the boxes to indicate if you have a checking account and a deposit / savings account.
   • Indicate if you would like to receive additional American Express Platinum Cards to your account and fill in the information required for additional cardholders.
4. 4 Check your information and apply. American Express can inform you of the decision within 60 seconds. You must be notified by mail within 10 days.

Tips

• Plan about 15 to 20 minutes to complete the card issuance application.
• Look for special offers that offer zero service fees in the first year or that offer extra bonus points to your new American Express Platinum Card.

Warnings

• American Express Platinum Card is a payment card, not a credit card. You must top up your balance every month.
• You must complete the American Express Platinum Card application within one online session. Leaving the application or closing your browser will result in a session timeout set for security reasons.
• You must be over 21 to receive an American Express Platinum Card. Additional cardholders must be 18 years of age or older.
