Sometimes the furniture looks like it is made of solid wood, but in reality it is covered with a thin wood-textured material called laminate flooring. Although not solid wood, laminate furniture can be re-painted to give it a fresh look. Before starting, you will need to do some preparatory work. Buy sandpaper and an oily primer to prepare the surface, then apply a fresh coat of paint.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: How to sand furniture

1. 1 Remove handles and locks from furniture. Put them in a bag so you don't get lost. If you cannot remove the fittings, then cover such elements with masking tape.
2. 2 Seal the dents with wood putty. This putty is sold at any hardware store. Wait for the required time for the putty to dry.
3. 3 Use 120 micron paper for light sanding of the surface. Work in a circular motion until the surface of the furniture is dull and dull. Do not sand too hard or the laminate may be damaged.
4. 4 Wipe the furniture with a damp cloth to remove wood dust. Make sure there is no dust on the surface before applying the primer.

Part 2 of 3: How to Apply the Primer

1. 1 Lay out the tarp in a well-ventilated area. Place furniture on a tarp to avoid staining the floor with primer or paint. If you don't have tarps, use old newspapers.
2. 2 Apply an oily primer to paintable surfaces. You can buy an oil primer at a hardware store or hardware store. Apply the primer evenly over the entire surface with a brush or roller.
   • You can also buy a primer in a spray can to make things easier.
3. 3 Let the primer dry for at least four hours. After four hours, gently touch the surface with your fingertip and make sure the primer is dry. If the surface is wet, wait.
4. 4 Sand the primed surface with 70 micron sandpaper. Sand the surface again with light circular motions. Then remove the dust with a damp cloth.

Part 3 of 3: How to paint furniture

1. 1 Use acrylic latex paint. Buy matte or glossy acrylic latex paint depending on your preference. Check out a hardware store or hardware store.
2. 2 Apply the first coat of paint with a brush or roller. Apply paint in short, even strokes in one direction. It's okay if the first layer looks slightly uneven or uneven.
3. 3 Let the paint dry for at least two hours. Some paints take longer to dry, so read the directions on the label. After two hours, touch the paint with your fingertip and make sure it is dry.
4. 4 Apply several coats until you get an even finish. Usually three or four coats of paint are required. Each layer should dry for at least two hours.
5. 5 Leave freshly painted furniture on for a week for the paint to harden. Knobs and locks can be replaced, but do not place other items on the furniture for a week or the paint may peel off. A special sealant can be applied when the last coat of paint is dry to further protect the surface.
