This article will teach you how to update the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device.

To step

Method 1 of 2: iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the App Store. You can find this on one of your home screens.
  2. Click the Updates tab. This is located in the lower right corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll through the Available Updates section to find Messenger. The Messenger app will Messenger and none Facebook.
    • No update is available for the app if Messenger is not listed in the Available Updates section.
  4. Click the Update button. First, make sure you are connected to a wireless network as the update can be extensive.
    • Click the What's New button to view the details of the update. You may not find much information here, as Facebook does not publish specific patch details for updates.
  5. Start Messenger after the update is installed. You will see the Update button change to a progress meter. Once the meter is full, the update will be downloaded and installed.
    • You can start Messenger by clicking the icon on your home screen. You can also swipe down on your home screen and type "Messenger" to search for it.
  6. If you are unable to update, delete and reinstall the app. If you are having trouble installing the update for Messenger, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. All data is stored in your Facebook account, so you will not lose any conversations:
    • Return to the home screen if you are still in the App Store.
    • Click on any app icon and hold until it starts to wiggle.
    • Click the "X" in the corner of the Messenger app.
    • Click on "Delete" to confirm.
    • Download the app again from the App Store.

Method 2 of 2: Android

  1. Open the Play Store. This is in your Apps list. The icon resembles a shopping bag with the Google Play logo on it.
  2. Click the ☰ button in the top left corner.
  3. Click the My apps & games button.
  4. Scroll through the Updates section and search for Messenger. Note that there may be multiple apps named Messenger installed (Google also has a separate Messenger app). Search for "Facebook" under the name of the app.
    • No update is available for your device if Messenger is not listed in the Updates section.
  5. Click the Messenger button. This will open the App Store page.
  6. Click the Update button. The update will start downloading unless you are currently downloading other updates. If so, the update will go into the waiting list and start downloading next.
    • Please connect to a cellular network before updating as the app can be quite large.
  7. Wait for the update to install.
  8. Start Messenger. You can click the OPEN button on the Messenger page in the Play Store, or you can click the Messenger app in your Apps list.
  9. If you cannot update, delete and reinstall Messenger. If you are having trouble updating, you can sometimes fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling the Messenger app. You will not lose any conversations, because they are all stored in your Facebook account:
    • Open the Play Store and search for Messenger.
    • Click Facebook Messenger in the list of results.
    • Click Delete and then OK to delete the app.
    • Click Install to download the app again.
